Chalazion vs Stye

We’ll show you how to spot the difference between a chalazion and a stye, and give the one home technique that clears most lumps fast.

How to tell the difference

A chalazion is a firm, painless bump hidden inside the lid, away from the lashes. A stye is red, tender, right on the lash line and often has a yellow tip, and they feel smooth, skin-coloured or faintly red.

Why glands block

When the oil in the tiny Meibomian glands thickens, it can plug the opening. Common triggers are chronic blepharitis, rosacea or oily skin, leftover makeup, and rubbing with dirty hands. Avoid rubbing with unwashed hands.

Easy heat tip

A quick alternative to a wet cloth is a rice sock. Fill a clean sock with uncooked rice, knot it, microwave for twenty to thirty seconds, shake, test on your wrist, then place on the eye. It stays warm longer than a wet cloth, giving deeper relief.

Warm compress steps

First wash your hands for twenty seconds. Soak a clean cotton cloth in warm water, wring it out, and press it on the closed eye for ten minutes, re-warming every two minutes. Then, with a clean fingertip, gently roll the lump toward the lash edge. Do not squeeze or pierce; that can push the material deeper.

Compress duration

Experts recommend ten minutes per session, three to four times a day, to melt the blocked oil. Doing this consistently for two to four weeks usually shrinks the lump. If after a month there’s no change, see an eye doctor.

The one simple fix

The single most effective home care is a warm compress followed by a gentle lid massage, done consistently for a few weeks. This combination melts the clogged oil and encourages it to drain, shrinking the lump without medication. Most people see improvement within a couple of weeks.
