CBC Basics
We'll walk through every line of your CBC and reveal the one result that means you need a doctor right away, and show you how to spot it quickly.
What is a CBC
A CBC, called Blood CP in many Pakistani labs, counts red cells, white cells and platelets on one page. Look at the reference range printed next to each number and any flag that falls outside.
How to read line by line
Start with your name, age and sex because the normal ranges for hemoglobin and red cells depend on them. Then read hemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit and the size columns MCV, MCH, MCHC. Finally look at total white cells and the differential percentages.
Haemoglobin levels
A hemoglobin of nine means anemia, but it doesn't tell you why. WHO defines anemia below 12 for non-pregnant women and below 13 for men. If you’re under those numbers, schedule a proper visit, though it’s usually not an emergency unless you feel unwell.
Why values shift
A CBC is a snapshot, and everyday things move it. Dehydration, a hot day or fasting can make hemoglobin look higher. A recent cold can keep white cells up for weeks. Altitude and smoking push hemoglobin up, while pregnancy dilutes blood and lowers it.
Extra numbers
Modern machines also give MPV and RDW for free. MPV is the average platelet size; a low platelet count with a high MPV suggests the marrow is making new platelets quickly. RDW hints at how long a red cell problem has been present.
Critical Hb level
If your hemoglobin falls below seven grams per deciliter, it’s a red flag that needs immediate medical attention.
Critical platelet count
Platelet counts under fifty thousand can cause spontaneous bleeding; see a doctor right away.
The one to watch
The single most urgent sign on a CBC is either a hemoglobin under seven or platelets under fifty thousand, don’t wait, get medical help right away.
