Bristol Stool Chart

Stick around and you'll learn how a simple shape on the toilet can tell you what your gut really needs.

Healthy Types

When you see a smooth, sausage-like stool, that's type three or four, it's the gold standard. It can show up anywhere from three times a day to three times a week, and it slides out without a fight.

Constipated Types

Hard, separate lumps or a lumpy sausage point to type one or two. Those shapes mean the waste sat in the colon too long, making it dry and painful to pass. You’ll usually feel you have to strain.

Loose Types

If the stool looks like mush or a watery splash, that's type six or seven. A single episode is fine, but if it lasts more than twenty-four hours in an adult, you should consider re-hydrating and looking at your diet.

Loose stool limit

Loose stools over twenty-four hours signal a need for more fluid and maybe a diet tweak.

Fiber vs Water

Fiber works like a sponge, soluble fiber soaks up water and bulks the stool, while insoluble fiber adds roughage for the colon to push against. But without enough water, fiber can actually make things harder.

Colour Alerts

Colour matters too. Black, tarry stool can mean digested blood from the upper gut. Bright red suggests fresh bleeding. Pale or clay-colored stool may mean bile isn’t reaching the intestines, pointing to liver or gallbladder concerns.

The one habit to try

The most useful habit is to log your stool shape each morning for two weeks. If you’re stuck at type one or two, add more fiber and water. If you’re at type six or seven, boost hydration and cut excess fiber. The pattern will tell you exactly what your gut wants.
