Blood Spot in Eye

A bright red patch on the white of your eye can look scary, but most of the time it's harmless and clears on its own. Stay tuned for the one simple step that can tell you if you need to worry.

What it is

The white of your eye is covered by a thin, clear layer called the conjunctiva. Tiny vessels sit there, and when one bursts, blood spreads flat under that layer like ink under film. Because the skin is transparent, even a small bleed looks dramatic, but it stays on the surface, so your sight isn’t affected.

Why it happens

A sudden rise in head pressure is the usual trigger. A strong cough, a big sneeze, vomiting, constipation, or lifting something heavy while holding your breath can cause a tiny vessel to pop. Sometimes it appears with no obvious cause, especially as we get older and vessels become more delicate.

Typical healing time

Usually the red patch fades on its own in about two weeks, changing from bright red to orange or yellow at the edges before disappearing.

When to worry

If the eye hurts, your vision blurs, you see a red line on the iris, or you’ve had a blow, a chemical splash, or a severe headache, seek care right away. Those signs can mean something more serious than a simple bleed.

What to do at home

A cold compress can soothe the first day but won’t speed healing. Check that it’s painless and vision is normal, cover the other eye and read small print. Take a blood pressure reading after five minutes of rest. Avoid rubbing.

Myth bust

A flat, painless red patch on the white of the eye does not mean bleeding inside the brain or the eye itself. The warning signs are severe headache, confusion, weakness, or a red line at the bottom of the iris, those need emergency care.

The one tip

The single most useful thing you can do is check your blood pressure. A reading of 135 over 85 or higher should prompt a doctor’s visit, and 180 over 120 with any symptoms is an emergency. Knowing your pressure helps you decide if the spot is just a harmless bleed or a sign of something bigger.
