Stay Calm, Act Fast
Stay calm, act fast, and avoid the sting from a rainy-day beetle.
Identify the Culprit
If you see a thin orange-black bug about a centimeter long crawling on you after a shower, that’s the rove beetle. It carries a liquid toxin inside, but it never bites.
Size of Beetle
The insect measures roughly one centimeter, just the size of a small fingernail.
First-Aid Steps
First, flick the bug off with a piece of paper or a gentle blow, don’t crush it. Then wash the area with plain soap and running water for at least five minutes. Finally, apply a cool, damp cloth for ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a day.
Wash Time
Cleaning for five minutes helps rinse away the toxin before it settles into the skin.
What the Rash Looks Like
The skin may look fine for several hours, then turns red and starts to burn, usually twelve to thirty-six hours later. The irritation often appears as a streak, not a single dot, and tiny water-filled blisters can form on the reddened area.
Remember, the beetle never attacks, you create the damage by crushing it against your skin.
When to See a Doctor
If the toxin gets into an eye, rinse with clean water for ten to fifteen minutes and seek care. Also call a doctor if the rash is large, on a child’s face, near genitals, or shows pus, spreading redness, fever, or red streaks.
The One Mistake to Avoid
The single most important habit is never to crush the beetle on your skin, just flick it off and wash quickly, and the painful rash can be prevented.
