Back Pain by Location

I'll walk you through the three common spots and what they usually mean.

Lower Back (Belt Line)

Pain across the lower back, sometimes into the buttocks, gets worse after long sitting or lifting. It’s usually muscle or ligament strain. You’ll feel it stiff in the morning, then loosen as you move.

Upper Back (Shoulder Blades)

A burning ache between the shoulder blades, often with a knot you can press, points to hours of head-forward posture. Laptop on the bed, phone at chest height, or low-counter work tighten the rhomboids and chest.

One-Sided High Pain

Pain on one side high under the ribs can be muscle or kidney. If it moves when you bend, twist or sit, it’s likely muscle. If it stays the same and you have fever or dark urine, get a doctor fast.

Typical recovery time

Most mechanical back aches settle in two to six weeks with simple home care.

Home Checks

Try three quick checks: press along the spine for tender spots, move slowly forward, back and side to side, and have someone lift a straight leg while you lie down. Notice which motion hurts.

Simple Exercises

For gentle relief do knee-to-chest stretches, pelvic tilts, and shoulder-blade squeezes. Hold each stretch for about twenty seconds, repeat a few times a day, and avoid sharp pain.

Heat & Cold

Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for fifteen minutes the first two days after a strain. Switch to heat for fifteen to twenty minutes later, but never on swollen or numb skin.

The one key tip

The one thing that tells you if it’s muscle or something serious is whether the pain changes with movement. If it does, simple stretches and posture fixes help; if it doesn’t, see a doctor right away.
