Rainy Season Baby Care

When monsoon clouds roll in, babies need three simple safeguards, a net, a dry diaper zone, and steady milk. Stick around and I’ll reveal the single rule that trumps all of them.

Mosquito protection

Mosquitoes carry dengue and malaria, and they bite even when babies nap. The safest shield is a fine net over any cot, pram or car seat. Keep the net snug, and avoid repellents on skin under two months.

Fever warning temperature

A temperature of 38 °C or higher in a baby under three months is a red flag, call a doctor right away, not tomorrow. It's the first sign that something serious could be brewing.

Nappy rash care

Damp diapers in humid air soften skin and cause pink irritation. Change the nappy every two to three hours, clean with plain water, let the skin air-dry for ten minutes, then spread a thick layer of zinc-oxide or petroleum barrier cream.

Diarrhoea feeding

When a baby has loose stools, keep the milk coming. Breast-milk or properly prepared formula replaces lost fluids and salts, and it helps the gut heal. For infants over six months, add oral rehydration salts as the doctor advises.

Fever age rules

Fever treatment changes with age. Under three months, any fever of 38 °C or more means a doctor now. Between three and six months, see a doctor the same day. Over six months, call a doctor if fever reaches 39 °C, lasts three days, or the child looks unwell.

The one rule

No matter how many nets you hang or creams you apply, the single rule that beats everything is this: any fever in a baby under three months requires immediate medical attention, don’t wait.
