Arabic Coffee at Home

Learn how to brew authentic Gulf coffee at home, using a light roast, fresh green cardamom, and dates, and stay tuned for the caffeine surprise that will change how you sip.

Gahwa vs Qahwa vs Kahwa

The word sounds similar across the region, but the drinks differ: Arabic gahwa is coffee spiced with cardamom, while qahwa in Urdu often means tea, and kahwa refers to green tea with spices. Always check if the first ingredient is beans or leaves.

Pan Method Recipe

Start by bringing roughly 550 ml of water to a rolling boil in a small pan. Add three tablespoons of medium-coarse ground light-roast Arabica, stir briefly, then lower the heat and let it simmer gently for ten to twelve minutes. Finally, turn off the flame and let the grounds settle for a few minutes before serving.

Caffeine per finjan

A typical finjan holds forty to fifty milliliters, and because the coffee is lightly roasted and only simmered, each pour delivers roughly ten to thirty milligrams of caffeine, about the same as a small sip of a regular filter coffee, but spread over many tiny servings.

Gahwa vs Turkish Coffee

Both drinks have UNESCO heritage, yet they differ in roast, grind, and flavor. Gahwa uses a light or almost blonde roast, medium-coarse grounds that are strained out, and generous cardamom or saffron. Turkish coffee is dark, ground to a fine powder that stays in the cup, and is usually served plain or with optional cardamom, often sweetened in the pot.

Sugar per date

Dates are the sweet side of the ritual. A small Ajwa, Kalmi, or similar local date packs about five grams of sugar, roughly a teaspoon, and twenty-five calories. Three small dates per round add fifteen grams of sugar, so if you’re watching intake, limit yourself to two dates per serving.

The one tip

If you want the experience to stay light and avoid hidden sugar, sip the coffee slowly, enjoy just one or two small dates per round, and keep track of how many finjans you drink, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine or managing blood sugar.
