Quick Dehydration Check
Watch till the end for the fastest home dehydration test.
Urine Colour Chart
Take a look at the first urine after you wake up. The morning pass is usually darker, so compare the second stream to the chart: pale straw is fine, amber means drink, brown or no urine for many hours means see a doctor.
No urine warning
If you haven’t peed for six to eight hours, especially in a child or elderly, it’s a red flag. Call emergency services right away.
Skin Pinch Test
Pinch a fold of skin on the back of your hand. If it snaps flat instantly you’re hydrated; if it stays tented for two seconds or more, you’re losing water. This test isn’t reliable after age sixty.
Lips, Tongue, Eyes
Run your tongue across your lips and the inside of your cheek. Sticky or tacky feeling means you’re dry. Sunken, dull eyes are a later sign, and a baby with no tears needs urgent care.
Thirst Comes Late
By the time you feel truly thirsty, you’re likely at shade four or five on the urine chart. Older adults may not feel thirst at all, so confusion or a fall could be the first clue.
Homemade ORS recipe
For rehydration after vomiting or heavy sweating, mix one litre of clean water with six teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. Stir until dissolved and sip slowly.
The one quick check
The quickest way to know if you’re dehydrated is to glance at the colour of your first morning urine. Keep it pale straw to light yellow and you’re fine; darker means drink now.
