Quick Home Anemia Check

Stay tuned to learn a quick eyelid trick that can hint at anemia, and the single most useful tip at the end.

Eyelid color check

Pull your lower eyelid down, look at it in natural daylight, and compare the inner surface to the inside of your lower lip. A bright red-pink means your blood is likely fine; a pale hue suggests you should get a proper test.

Palms, nails, tongue

Open your palm and stretch your fingers; the creases should appear pinker than the surrounding skin. Press a nail until it turns white, then release, healthy nail beds refill to pink within a couple of seconds. A pale tongue can also be a clue.

Eyelid check time

A five-second glance is all you need for the eyelid check.

Symptoms to watch

Pay attention to how you feel. Persistent tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix, shortness of breath after just one flight of stairs, a racing heart on light effort, or cold hands in a warm room are early warnings that blood may be low.

Nail refill speed

Healthy nail beds bounce back in about two seconds.

When to get blood test

If you have heavy periods, are pregnant, have a toddler drinking more than half a litre of milk daily, or follow a vegetarian diet that limits meat, consider a blood test even if you feel okay.

The one practical step

The one practical step: if your eyelid looks pale, don’t self-medicate with iron; schedule a complete blood count to confirm anemia and its cause before starting any supplement.
