Abhayarishta for Constipation
We'll explore the tonic, how it works, who should avoid it, and a simple habit to try.
What is Abhayarishta
Abhayarishta is a fermented Ayurvedic tonic built around haritaki, the fruit used in triphala. It also includes raisins, vidanga, mahua flowers, and purging roots like trivrit. During fermentation a few percent alcohol and sugar develop.
How it works
The herb haritaki offers a mild laxative and astringent effect. Adding trivrit, a stronger purgative, boosts the cleanse. The mix is boiled, sweetened with jaggery, then left to ferment; yeasts turn sugar into alcohol, extracting plant compounds and preventing spoilage.
Should you use it?
Many people skip it for everyday use because it contains alcohol, sugar, and can interact with meds. If you’re pregnant, nursing, a child, have liver or bowel inflammation, or take alcohol-sensitive drugs like diuretics, heart meds, diabetes meds, or blood thinners, it’s safest to avoid it.
Quote
A laxative you need every night isn’t working; it’s covering for something.
Simple habits first
Before reaching for a tonic, try these everyday habits: drink a glass of warm water when you wake, stay hydrated with about eight glasses a day, slowly add fiber like dal, beans, veggies and fruit, choose whole-wheat flour, and walk twenty to thirty minutes after meals.
The one habit to try
The single most useful habit is to start each day with a glass of warm water; it jump-starts digestion without any alcohol or sugar.
