7-Day Smog-Proof Reset
Want fresher indoor air without buying a purifier? Stay till the end for the habit that makes the biggest difference.
Day 1, Window Schedule
First, check an air-quality app at seven am, one pm and nine pm. Then close windows at sunset and open two opposite windows for ten to fifteen minutes around noon. Always leave a tiny gap in any room with a gas heater.
Cross-breeze window
A short cross-breeze of ten to fifteen minutes at midday drops most indoor particles.
Day 2, Shoes Off
Street dust rides in on shoes, so put a coarse mat outside and another inside. Switch to a damp cloth or mop instead of dry sweeping. Keep shoes on a rack and wear indoor-only slippers.
Day 3, Smoke-Free Kitchen
Frying at high heat pumps fine particles into a closed kitchen. Turn the exhaust fan on before the pan heats and keep it running ten minutes after. Open the kitchen window a crack while cooking, and use lids and lower flames to cut smoke.
The cheapest air cleaner in the house is the pan lid.
Day 4, Mask Hook
Screw a hook beside the front door for each person’s mask and keep a paper bag for spares. Put the mask on at the door and take it off there too. Set up a small rinse station with soap, a towel and a jug of cooled boiled water for quick face and hand washes when you come home.
Day 5, Bedroom Guard
Wipe the window sill, headboard and fan blades with a damp cloth. Change pillowcases twice a week on bad smog days. Keep the bedroom door shut in the evening so kitchen and street smoke stay out. Add a bowl of water or a line of drying laundry to add moisture when heaters run.
The one habit to keep
The single most effective habit is to keep windows closed at sunset and open them for a brief cross-breeze at noon, every day.
