Hidden Sugar Reset
Learn how to spot sneaky sugar and walk away with one simple habit in just a week.
What counts as hidden sugar
Hidden sugar is any sweetener added during manufacturing or cooking that you didn’t pour in yourself. It shows up in sauces, breads, and even so-called natural snacks.
Recommended limit
WHO recommends free sugars stay under ten percent of your daily calories, roughly fifty grams, which is about twelve teaspoons. That’s the practical ceiling many aim for.
Reading a label
When you glance at a package, first scan the ingredient list, it’s ordered by weight, so any sugar or syrup near the top signals a sweet product. Then check the nutrition table per one hundred grams, not per serving, because serving sizes can be misleading.
First three scan
A quick trick is the ‘first three’ scan. Flip the bag over and read only the first three ingredients. If any of those are a sugar name, the food is likely sweet, even if the label boasts wholegrain or natural.
Days 1-3: label, ketchup, biscuits
Day one is simple, pick three pantry items like ketchup, a biscuit pack and a cereal, then note the ingredient list and sugar per hundred grams. Day two focuses on ketchup and sauces; try a squeeze of lemon or a low-sugar homemade version. Day three compares two biscuit brands and picks the one with less sugar, or swaps them for plain roasted chickpeas or nuts.
Days 4-5: cereal & drinks
Day four tackles breakfast, compare plain yoghurt with fruit-flavoured versions, or swap sugary muesli for plain oats topped with fresh fruit. Day five looks at drinks; check the sugar per hundred millilitres in lassi, flavored milk or instant mixes, and replace one sugary sip a day with water, plain buttermilk or unsweetened tea.
Days 6-7: sweets & keepers
Day six is about mithai, instead of a big piece, enjoy a smaller portion slowly after a meal, and keep the rest out of sight. Day seven is the wrap-up: review which swaps you liked, write them on your shopping list, and make them your new defaults.
The one habit to keep
The one habit to keep is a daily label-reading check. Each day, pick one product, read the first three ingredients, and if sugar shows up, swap it for a lower-sugar alternative you enjoy. This single step builds lasting awareness.
