Budget Meals Reset
In this video you'll learn a simple kitchen habit that slashes your grocery bill and keeps food from ending up in the trash.
Day 1: Set your limit
First, gather all your food receipts, delivery notes and even the memory of tea stall visits. Add them up, split the sum by seven days, and write a slightly lower daily target on a note you’ll see every day.
Day 2: Check your pantry
Before you shop, open every cupboard, fridge and freezer. Write down each dal, grain, vegetable and egg you already have. Choose two or three meals from that list, pulling the oldest items to the front so they get used first.
Day 3: Shop with meals
Make a shopping list that’s organized by meals, not just by items. Choose the seasonal vegetable that’s abundant at the market, pick whole lentils in bulk, and map out breakfast, lunch and dinner so you only buy what you’ll actually use.
Day 4: Double batch daal
When you have time, cook a double batch of daal. Eat half today, then tomorrow give the other half a fresh tadka of cumin and garlic or turn it into a soup. The second dinner costs only a splash of oil and a few seconds.
Day 5: Turn leftovers
Look at what’s left. Turn stale roti into crispy chaat or upma, blend overripe bananas into pancakes or a sweet roti, and toss vegetable peels into a quick stock. Keep a small fridge box labelled ‘eat first’ so soft items get cooked next.
Day 6: Budget swaps
Swap a few things you like. Buy whole lentils and chana in bulk, make your own dahi instead of flavored yogurt, replace one take-out meal with a home-cooked version, and drink water or plain chai rather than bottled drinks.
Reset length
The whole plan runs for seven days, giving you a full week to test the habit and see the impact on your food bill.
The one habit to cut waste
The single most powerful habit is cooking a double batch of a staple like daal and then deliberately repurposing the second half into a new dish. Pair that with planning meals around what you already have, and waste drops dramatically.
