Open Windows on Winter Mornings: Five Minutes, If AQI Allows
Open windows on a winter morning, two of them for five minutes after you wake, but only if the air outside is acceptable that day. Check the AQI first. If it is poor, skip the habit and keep the house closed.
In brief
- The habit: two windows open for five minutes each winter morning
- The anchor: making the bed
- The condition: outdoor AQI is acceptable

Why do closed winter rooms feel stuffy?
In cold weather everything gets shut: windows, doors, the gap under the door gets a rolled towel. A bedroom with people breathing in it all night, a heater running and a quilt pulled up smells stale by morning. A few minutes of fresh air changes that. That is the plain reason for the habit, it is about comfort and freshness, not a health treatment.
How do you air a room properly?
One open window barely moves air. Two windows on opposite sides, or one window and the door to a room with another open window, let air flow through. That is cross ventilation. Five minutes of a strong through draught beats an hour with one window cracked open.
- Wake up, and check the AQI on your phone before anything else.
- If the reading is acceptable, make the bed with the windows closed, or fold the quilt back so the bedding airs too.
- Open two windows or a window and a door on opposite sides.
- Step out of the draught, into another room, for five minutes.
- Close the windows, and enjoy a room that smells less like last night.
Air the room before the cooking starts
Do this before the stove or tawa is lit, not after. Fresh air first means the kitchen smells and smoke have more room to go, and the house starts the day with a clean baseline. Open the kitchen window before the first chai.
When should you not open the windows?
On smoggy days. The point of airing a room is to swap stale air for better air, and on a day when the outdoor AQI is poor the swap goes the wrong way. Learn to read the numbers in AQI numbers explained, and if winter smog is your problem, the plan in the 7 day smog proof home reset covers the whole home. Cooking smoke indoors is its own topic in indoor air pollution and lungs.
If mornings are poor where you live, try a short airing later in the day on a better reading instead. The AQI app is the judge, not the clock.
How do you air a room without a freezing draught?
Keep the five minutes short, and wear a shawl or cardigan. Open the windows in the rooms you are not standing in. Move the bed, a child or an older person out of the line of the draught. Close the doors of rooms you are not airing so the cold does not spread everywhere.
What will this not do?
It will not clear mould, remove dust mites or fix a damp wall. For a sneezing bedroom, morning sneezing and dust mite bedroom fixes has the bedding side. It also will not replace a working extractor fan or a chimney where you burn fuel. Never use airing as a reason to run a gas heater, charcoal or coal in a closed room: those need proper ventilation all the time, not five minutes.
Skip the habit on any day the AQI is poor, and be extra careful if anyone at home has asthma, heart or lung disease, or is a baby or an older person. See a doctor if you or someone at home has a cough, wheeze, breathlessness or headache that comes back in closed rooms, or if a heater or stove is in use and anyone feels dizzy, sleepy or sick. Leave the room and get fresh air at once in that case.
Opening windows in winter: your questions answered
Should I open windows in winter?
Yes, briefly, when the outdoor air is acceptable. Five minutes with two windows open is enough to freshen a room without chilling the house.
How do I ventilate a winter room?
Open windows on opposite sides so air passes through. A short strong draught works better than one window left slightly open all day.
Why does my bedroom smell stale in winter?
Closed windows, breathing through the night and bedding all hold on to air that does not get swapped. Airing the room each morning clears most of it.
Should I open windows during smog?
No. If the AQI is poor, keep windows closed and skip the habit that day.
How often should I air a room?
Once in the morning is a workable routine. Add a short airing later if the room feels stuffy again.
How do I ventilate without a cold draught?
Keep it to five minutes, open windows in rooms you are not sitting in, and wear a shawl. Move babies and older people out of the line of air.
Is cold weather ventilation worth it?
Short airing is. Leaving windows open for hours loses heat and, on smoggy days, lets polluted air in.
Can I open windows while a heater is running?
Airing with the heater off is safest. Fuel burning heaters need constant ventilation, so ask an expert if yours does not have it.
This habit belongs with the other small seasonal routines in Tiny Habits. Tomorrow morning, check the AQI, then open two windows.
