School Day Routine for Kids: Morning, After School, Bedtime

The calm school morning is won the night before. Pack the bag, lay out the uniform, and put your child to bed early enough to get 9 to 12 hours of sleep, and the 6:30 am rush shrinks to four jobs: wake, wash, eat, go. Below is a school morning routine for kids aged 5 to 12, the after-school hours that most charts skip, a timetable you can copy onto the fridge, and a shorter version for the days everything goes wrong.

In brief

  • Ages: 5 to 12, with notes for younger siblings
  • Sleep: 9 to 12 hours a night for ages 6 to 12, 10 to 13 hours for 3 to 5
  • Night before: bag, uniform, shoes, water bottle, breakfast plan
  • Breakfast: something with protein, ready in 10 minutes
  • After school: lunch, rest, homework, outdoor play, then the evening slots
  • Missed a step? Keep the wake-up and bedtime; everything else can move

Start with bedtime: work out the wake-up time first

If the school van honks at 6:50 and your child needs 40 minutes to get ready, the alarm goes at 6:10. Count back 10 hours for a 7-year-old and lights out lands at about 8:10. That’s the whole logic of a school day routine in two sums.

How much sleep is enough depends on the age band. Babies under 1 and toddlers from 1 to 3 need far more (11 to 14 hours or so, naps included) and follow their own schedule. From 3 to 6, 10 to 13 hours. Over 6, 9 to 12 hours. Most Pakistani and Indian school children get less than that, largely because dinner and the TV run late. Sleep also feeds into growth and concentration, which our piece on what really affects a child’s height covers without the hype.

A calm morning is packed the night before.

The night-before checklist

Ten minutes after dinner, before screens go off. Let the child do as much as they can; a 6-year-old can pack a bag with a picture checklist, and a 10-year-old can do it all.

  1. Check the diary or school app for homework, notices and tomorrow’s timetable.
  2. Pack the bag by timetable, including the sports kit on PE days.
  3. Uniform, socks, belt, tie and polished shoes laid out in one spot.
  4. Water bottle washed and left upside down to dry; lunchbox washed.
  5. Decide breakfast and the lunchbox. Soak dalia or boil eggs if needed.
  6. Phones and tablets on charge outside the bedroom.

School morning routine for kids: the chart

Here’s a sample for a school that starts at 7:45 with a 7:00 van. Shift the times to fit yours.

TimeStep
6:15Wake, curtains open, toilet, a glass of water
6:20Wash face, brush teeth, uniform on
6:35Breakfast, sitting down, 10 to 15 minutes
6:50Shoes, bag, bottle, lunchbox, hair done
7:00Out of the door to the van or rickshaw

No screens before school. They turn a 15-minute breakfast into 40 minutes of dawdling.

Breakfasts that are ready in 10 minutes

  • Boiled egg (boiled the night before) with half a paratha or a slice of bread and a glass of milk.
  • Dalia or oats cooked in milk, soaked overnight so it cooks in 5 minutes, with chopped banana.
  • Leftover roti rolled with an omelette or a spoon of last night’s sabzi.
  • Dahi with a handful of fruit and a slice of toast, for the child who “can’t eat in the morning”.
  • Besan cheela from batter mixed the night before.

For children under 5 in the house, keep grapes quartered, nuts ground rather than whole, and apples or carrots grated or cooked soft, since hard raw chunks and whole nuts are a choking risk before 5. Lunchbox ideas built from leftover roti and daal are in our desi school lunchbox guide.

Daily routine after school: lunch, rest, homework, play

The afternoon is where most routines fall apart, because it’s long and nobody planned it. A tired, hungry child can’t do homework, so food and a rest come first.

TimeWhat happens
2:00Home, uniform off, hands washed, lunch
2:30 to 3:15Rest: a nap for 5 to 6 year olds, quiet time for older ones
3:30 to 4:30Homework block, at a table, TV off
4:30 to 5:30Outdoor play: gali cricket, cycling, park, rooftop
5:30 to 6:30Quran class, tuition or a hobby
6:30 to 7:30Free time, including an agreed screen slot
7:30Dinner with the family if possible
8:00Bag and uniform for tomorrow, bath or wash, teeth
8:30 to 9:00Story or reading in bed, lights out

Homework, Quran and tuition slots

Match the homework block to the age: about 15 to 20 minutes of focus for a 6-year-old, 30 to 45 for a 10-year-old, with a short break between subjects. If the child has Quran class and tuition on the same evening, drop one other thing rather than squeezing into bedtime. In peak summer, move outdoor play to after 5:30 or early morning, and in Ramadan or exam weeks the whole afternoon will look different, which is fine.

Leave evening chai out of a young child’s routine, because its caffeine competes with sleep and a plain glass of milk or water does the job; the full answer on age and iron is in our piece on bachon ko chai.

How it was done

In many older homes the school day ran on fixed family anchors: breakfast together after Fajr, lunch when school ended, a short rest in the hottest hours, sabaq (Quran lesson) at Asr and an early dinner. The idea holds up well: fixed anchors, rest in the heat, early nights. The part worth updating is the late-night TV that crept in after it.

When the routine slips, and a busy-parent version

Some mornings the van comes early, the tie is missing and someone cries. Here’s how to keep one bad day from wrecking the week:

  • Late night: keep the wake-up time anyway, and bring bedtime 30 minutes earlier that evening.
  • Missed breakfast: pack a banana, a paratha roll or a boiled egg for the van, not a packet of crisps.
  • No time for the full evening chart: keep just four things: lunch, homework, 30 minutes outside, bed on time.
  • Two working parents: give the child jobs they can own (bag, shoes, bottle) and use a picture checklist on the door.

Missing a day of the routine is fine. Pick it up the next night with the bag and the bedtime, and the morning follows.

Take care if

See a doctor if your child is often too tired to wake, falls asleep in class, snores loudly with pauses, complains of headaches or blurry board work, or has tummy aches or vomiting mostly on school mornings (which can be worry about school, bullying or a real illness, and deserves a gentle conversation as well as a check). Get medical help today for a fever of 39 °C or more with the child unwell, fever lasting more than 3 days, a stiff neck, a rash that doesn’t fade under a pressed glass, or a child who is drowsy or hard to wake. Keep children home with a fever, vomiting or diarrhoea until they’re well, and give fever medicine only by the dose on the pack for the child’s weight or as a pharmacist advises; never aspirin under 16.

School day routine questions

What is a good school morning routine for kids?

Wake at a fixed time, toilet and water, wash and brush, uniform, a sit-down breakfast, then shoes and bag. With the bag and uniform ready from the night before, it takes 40 to 45 minutes.

What time should a school child go to bed?

Count back 9 to 12 hours from the wake-up time. A 6 to 12 year old waking at 6:15 needs lights out between about 8 and 9 pm.

What should a daily routine after school look like?

Lunch first, then 30 to 45 minutes of rest, a homework block, at least an hour of active play, any Quran class or tuition, dinner and an early bedtime.

How do I make a kids daily routine chart?

List 6 to 8 steps with times, use pictures for children under 7, and stick it at child height on the fridge or door. Let the child tick or move a peg as they go.

My child won’t eat breakfast. What can I do?

Offer something small and easy, like dahi, a banana or milk with a slice of toast, and pack a proper snack for break time. Waking 10 minutes earlier often helps appetite.

Should homework be done straight after school?

Usually after lunch and a short rest, not straight off the van. A fed, rested child finishes faster than a hungry one.

How much outdoor play does a school child need?

Aim for at least an hour of active play a day, and more daylight time is good for eyes too. In peak heat, shift it to early morning or after sunset.

Is it okay for my child to have tuition every day?

It can work if sleep, play and meals still fit. If tuition pushes bedtime late or removes all play, drop a day or shorten it.

How can I stop morning rushing and shouting?

Move every possible job to the night before, wake 10 minutes earlier, keep screens off in the morning, and give each child one job they own.

Should school children nap after school?

A 5 or 6 year old often benefits from a short nap. Older children do better with quiet time, since a long late nap pushes bedtime back.
