Pomegranate Peel Powder (Anar Chilka): Face, Hair and Tooth Uses

Thrown out every anar chilka this season? That leathery peel, dried until it snaps and ground fine, makes pomegranate peel powder: a strongly astringent, tan-brown powder that suits oily-skin face packs, a brown tint in mehndi and old-style manjan. It is harsh, though, so it dries skin and wears teeth if you overdo it. Here’s how to make it at home, how to use it outside the body, and where to stop.

How to make pomegranate peel powder at home

Our anardana and peel tea guide covers drying peel for the kitchen and making peel tea, so we’ll skip the tea here. The powder needs one thing above all: patience, because the peel is thick and holds water deep inside, and a piece that feels crisp outside can still be damp in the middle, which is exactly how a jar of peel powder goes mouldy three weeks later.

  1. Wash the fruit under running water, rubbing the skin for 20 seconds, before you open it. Pomegranates are often sprayed in the orchard.
  2. Break the peel into pieces about 2 to 3 cm across. Small pieces dry evenly. Pull off any seeds still stuck to the inside.
  3. Sun or shade: spread on a steel tray under muslin in a dry, airy place for 4 to 7 days, bringing it in at night. Turn daily.
  4. Oven: 60 °C with the door ajar for 3 to 5 hours, turning every hour.
  5. Test: a piece should snap cleanly and sound hard when dropped on the counter. Any bend means more time.
  6. Check the inner side of every piece. Grey, green or white fuzz, or a musty smell? Throw that batch away; mouldy peel isn’t saved by grinding.
  7. Grind in short bursts in a strong grinder (the peel is tough), then sieve twice through a fine strainer. Keep the coarse bits for the next grind.

The peels of 4 or 5 large anar fill a small jar. Store the powder in an airtight glass jar in a dark cupboard, and it keeps well for about 6 months. It should smell dry and faintly woody, like tea leaves. Sour, damp or musty? Out it goes.

Pomegranate peel powder for face: an oily-skin pack

The peel is loaded with tannins, the same puckery compounds you taste when you bite the white pith by mistake, and on skin they give a tight, matte, “clean” feeling that people with oily skin tend to love. The same tightness dries out normal and dry skin fast. So this is a pack for oily skin, and even then, not often.

  1. Mix 1/2 teaspoon peel powder with 1 tablespoon plain dahi, or with gulab jal if your skin is very oily.
  2. Apply a thin layer to a clean face, avoiding eyes and lips.
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water after 10 minutes, before it dries hard.
  4. Follow with a light moisturiser.

Once a week is enough. It can leave a faint yellowish tint on very fair skin and will stain white towels. Patch test inside your elbow first and wait 48 hours.

Pomegranate peel powder for hair: rinse and mehndi tint

A peel rinse

Steep 2 tablespoons of peel powder in 500 ml of just-boiled water for 30 minutes. Cool, then strain through a thin cotton cloth, because loose grit is miserable to comb out. After shampooing, pour it slowly over your hair, leave it 5 minutes and rinse lightly with plain water. Hair often feels thicker and less greasy for a day. On light, grey or bleached hair it can leave a brassy yellow-brown cast. Hair fall, dandruff and hair growth are different stories; peel won’t fix any of them.

Brown tint on mehndi

Pomegranate peel is an old dye plant. Stir about 2 tablespoons of peel powder into every 100 g of pure henna before adding water, and the finished colour on grey strands usually comes out a little browner and less orange than henna alone. It’s a nudge, not a new colour. Use only pure henna for this; “black mehndi” cones and packs can contain PPD, which causes nasty skin burns.

Tooth uses: the old manjan ingredient

Anar chilka has long been part of home tooth powders, mixed with things like salt, clove and neem, and its astringency leaves gums feeling firm and the mouth feeling clean. That’s where the story gets complicated, since any powder you rub on teeth is also an abrasive, and daily hard scrubbing with a gritty manjan can wear enamel and push gums back over months. If you like the tradition, grind it as fine as flour, use a tiny amount with a soft brush or a fingertip, and keep fluoride toothpaste as your main cleaner. Read our honest verdict on homemade manjan before making it a habit, and see the gentler neem, clove and salt recipe for fine-grinding tips. Bleeding, swollen or painful gums need a dentist. Not powder.

Fine as flour, gentle as a fingertip, and never instead of toothpaste.

Myth: anar peel powder removes pigmentation and acne scars

It doesn’t. A tannin pack can make skin feel tighter and look less shiny for an afternoon, which reads as “brighter” in a selfie, but it doesn’t fade melasma, lift old acne marks or change your skin colour. Scars and dark patches respond to time, daily sunscreen and, where needed, a dermatologist. The myth sticks because the peel feels so active on the skin. Feeling strong isn’t the same as doing something lasting.

Before you try it

This guide is for use outside the body. We don’t give drinking amounts of peel powder for loose motions, worms or anything else, because the peel is strong stuff and large amounts by mouth can upset the stomach. A child with loose motions needs ORS and a watchful eye, not peel water; our loose motions in children guide has ORS amounts by age and the dehydration signs that mean go to a doctor now. Pregnant or breastfeeding? Keep to rinse-off cosmetic use and skip peel drinks unless your doctor says otherwise. On skin: patch test, nothing on cuts, eczema or sunburn, and stop if it burns or itches. Swelling of the face or lips, or trouble breathing, is an emergency.

In the old books

Unani and Ayurvedic texts both describe pomegranate rind as strongly astringent and drying, and traditional healers used it on gums and as a wash. In Unani terms it’s cold and dry. These descriptions are tradition, not proof that the peel fixes any illness.

Did you know?

Pomegranate rind has been used for centuries to tan leather and to dye cloth in shades from yellow to brown. And the word “grenade” comes from the French name for the pomegranate, because early hand bombs were packed with small pieces like seeds in a fruit.

Pomegranate peel powder questions people ask

How to make pomegranate peel powder at home?

Wash the fruit, break the peel into small pieces, dry them in sun or shade for 4 to 7 days or at 60 °C in an oven until they snap, then grind and sieve. Check every piece for mould before grinding.

How to use pomegranate peel powder for face?

Mix 1/2 teaspoon with a tablespoon of dahi or gulab jal, apply for 10 minutes and rinse. It suits oily skin; dry skin usually finds it too tight.

Pomegranate peel powder benefits for skin?

Mostly a temporary tight, matte feel from its tannins, which oily skin enjoys. It doesn’t whiten skin or remove scars.

How to use pomegranate peel powder for hair?

As a strained final rinse after shampoo, or stirred into pure henna for a browner tone. Rinse lightly afterwards if hair feels stiff.

Can pomegranate peel powder dye hair?

Only a little. It nudges henna towards brown and can tint light hair yellow-brown, but it won’t cover grey on its own.

Pomegranate peel powder side effects?

Dryness and irritation on skin, stains on fabric and light hair, and enamel wear if scrubbed on teeth too hard or too often. Large amounts by mouth can upset the stomach.

Is pomegranate peel good for teeth?

It’s a traditional manjan ingredient that leaves gums feeling firm, but it doesn’t replace fluoride toothpaste. Grind it very fine and use it gently.

Can I give anar peel water to a child with loose motions?

Please don’t. Give ORS, keep feeding, and watch for dehydration signs such as few wet nappies, sunken eyes or unusual sleepiness, which need a doctor.

Can I use pomegranate peel powder during pregnancy?

A patch-tested, rinse-off face pack is generally fine. Skip peel drinks and teas as remedies unless your doctor agrees.

How long does pomegranate peel powder last?

About 6 months in an airtight glass jar in the dark. Discard it if it smells musty or sour.

Pomegranate peel powder vs pomegranate powder: what’s the difference?

Peel powder is ground dried rind: brown, bitter and astringent. “Pomegranate powder” usually means dried seeds or juice powder, like anardana, which is sour and used in cooking.
