Pat Dry Skin After Bath, Don’t Rub: Calmer Winter Skin

Press and pat the towel on your skin instead of rubbing, and leave a little dampness behind. Dermatologists warn that rubbing can irritate very dry skin, and the damp skin you leave is ready for moisturiser in the next step.

In brief

  • What: press and pat the towel on skin, do not rub
  • When: the moment you step out of the bath or shower
  • Result: skin slightly damp, ready for moisturiser
  • Bonus: a small soft face towel kept just for your face

Why does rubbing irritate dry skin?

Towel fabric has a texture, and rubbing drags it across skin that already has less natural oil. In winter that skin is often tight, flaky or itchy after the bath. Hot water and strong soap strip some oils away, and brisk rubbing adds friction on top. The American Academy of Dermatology says plainly that rubbing your skin dry can irritate extremely dry skin and advises patting dry with a clean towel.

It is a small change. It means the towel lifts the water off your skin instead of scrubbing at it.

How do I pat dry properly?

  1. Step out and take the towel in both hands.
  2. Press it against one arm, hold for a second, lift, then move on. Use the same press for legs, chest and back.
  3. For the face, press the towel gently on cheeks, forehead and around the nose instead of dragging it across.
  4. Stop while the skin still feels slightly damp.
  5. Go straight to moisturiser. The reason is covered in moisturise within 60 seconds.

Keep a separate face towel

Keep a small, soft towel only for your face. Body towels are larger and rougher, and they pick up more friction and more of whatever is on your body. A separate face towel is cheap, easy to wash often, and the quickest way to be kinder to facial skin.

What about hair?

Do not rub wet hair hard with a towel, which roughens the strands. Squeeze and press the water out, then wrap the towel loosely for a few minutes. A soft old cotton t-shirt works too. This also keeps the towel from dragging on your neck and shoulders.

Does the towel itself matter?

Yes. A stiff, old or damp towel is rougher on the skin and can harbour germs. Wash towels on a regular schedule and let them dry fully in the sun or air. The schedule is in towels and loofah wash and replace schedule, so there is no need to repeat it here.

What else makes winter skin itchy after a bath?

Pat drying is only part of the picture. Very hot water, long showers and harsh soap all dry the skin more. The AAD suggests shorter baths of about 5 to 10 minutes in warm water. For a full shower routine, see the everything shower, and for traditional options, winter dry skin home remedies.

What this habit will not do

Patting dry will not fix dry skin on its own. It reduces one source of irritation and sets up the moisturiser step. Persistent dryness can have other causes, so it is worth getting checked if the skin stays dry despite good care.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor or dermatologist if itching keeps you awake, if the skin is red, cracked, weeping or scaly, if a rash appears, or if dry skin carries on after you have tried these basics for a few weeks. Persistent dry skin can come from conditions such as eczema or other health problems. Stop any product that burns or stings.

Pat dry versus rub dry: your questions

Should I pat dry or rub dry my skin?

Pat dry. Dermatologists advise it because rubbing can irritate extremely dry skin.

How do I dry my skin after a shower?

Press a clean towel against each area, lift and move on, leaving the skin slightly damp. Then moisturise straight away.

Why is my skin dry after a bath in winter?

Hot water, long baths, soap and dry winter air strip oils from the skin. Shorter, warm showers and moisturiser right after help.

Can towel rubbing irritate skin?

Yes, especially skin that is already dry or sensitive. Friction from a rough towel can leave it red or itchy.

Why should I leave my skin damp before moisturiser?

Moisturiser applied to slightly damp skin helps hold that water in. The American Academy of Dermatology advises applying it while skin is still damp.

Why is my skin itchy after a bath in winter?

Dry skin often itches after hot water and rubbing. Patting dry and moisturising can help, and itching that persists should be seen by a doctor.

How do I dry my face with a towel?

Press a soft, clean towel gently on your cheeks and forehead instead of dragging it. A separate face towel is gentler than a body towel.

How often should I wash my towel?

Follow a regular wash schedule and dry the towel fully between uses. Details are in the towel and loofah schedule article linked above.
