Neelibhringadi Oil for Hair: Ingredients, Hair Fall and Grey Hair

Neelibhringadi oil is a Kerala hair oil cooked from indigo leaf (neel), bhringraj and amla in coconut or sesame oil with milk; it’s a good conditioning scalp oil with a cooling reputation, but it won’t stop hair fall caused by low iron, thyroid, stress or genes, and it won’t dye your grey hair black.

In brief

  • Main herbs: neeli (indigo leaf), bhringraj (false daisy), amla, mulethi (licorice root)
  • Base: coconut oil in most Kerala brands, sesame in some, often cooked with cow’s or goat’s milk
  • Look: very dark green to almost black, with a herbal, milky smell
  • Fair use: scalp oil 1 to 2 hours before washing, two or three times a week
  • Won’t: reverse genetic thinning, regrow a bald patch, or colour hair

What’s in neelibhringadi oil?

The name lists its first two herbs: neeli and bhringa. The rest of the label varies by maker, but you’ll usually see:

  • Neeli (Indigofera tinctoria): the indigo plant. Its leaf powder is the “kala” used with henna to dye hair dark.
  • Bhringraj (Eclipta alba): called keshraj, “king of hair”, in tradition.
  • Amla: the sour gooseberry, used in hair oils across South Asia.
  • Mulethi, and sometimes gunja seeds or other herbs: listed in classical versions.
  • Milk: cow’s, goat’s, buffalo’s or coconut milk is cooked in. It’s part of why the oil feels “cooling” in the tradition.

Juices and pastes are cooked with the oil over low heat for hours until the water is gone. What’s left is a dark, slightly thick oil.

What do people say neelibhringadi oil does?

The famous claim

Stops hair fall in weeks, turns grey hair black, grows thick long hair, cools the head and helps sleep. Before-and-after photos are everywhere.

What tradition says

Old wisdom

In Ayurveda, early greying and hair fall are linked to excess pitta (heat) reaching the head. Neelibhringadi is classed as a cooling oil, rubbed into the crown to calm that heat, help sleep and keep hair black and strong. Kerala families used it as a regular head oil, the way Pakistani homes use coconut or sarson oil for champi.

Our honest take

Worth it as a conditioning scalp oil if you like it. Any oil reduces friction, makes hair less brittle and calms a dry scalp. Bhringraj and amla have some interesting lab results for hair, but there’s no solid human evidence that this oil reduces true hair fall better than plain coconut oil. The cooling feeling after a head massage is real, and so is the relaxation.

Skip it as a hair fall treatment if your shedding is heavy, sudden or patchy. That needs causes checked.

Will neelibhringadi oil stop hair fall?

Only if your “hair fall” is really breakage from dry, rough hair. Oil helps there. Real shedding from the root usually has a cause:

  • low iron or ferritin, low vitamin D or B12
  • thyroid problems
  • a fever, illness, surgery, crash diet or childbirth 2 to 3 months earlier
  • genetic thinning (a widening parting or receding temples)
  • alopecia areata (round smooth bald patches)

Most of these show up on simple blood tests or in the pattern of the loss itself, so a doctor can usually sort a nutrient or thyroid problem from inherited thinning or a patchy autoimmune loss in one visit, and that answer saves months of hopeful oiling. Worth the trip.

Our guide to hair fall causes to test lists the blood tests worth asking for. And if you’re comparing popular oils, see onion vs bhringraj vs coconut oil for the head-to-head.

Oil can stop hair breaking. It can’t fix what’s making it fall from the root.

Myth: neelibhringadi oil turns grey hair black

Indigo dyes hair when its leaf powder is mixed with water, left to develop and applied as a paste, usually after henna. Cooked into oil, there’s very little dye that reaches the hair. Grey hairs stay grey. Some people notice a faint dark tint on a white pillowcase or a slightly darker look to freshly oiled hair, which washes out. If you want to colour grey naturally, henna then indigo paste is the honest route, and our henna and indigo grey cover guide explains timings.

Myth: the dark colour will stain your hair or rub off as dye

The oil is dark because of cooked plant juices. It can mark towels and pillows, much like any dark oil, but it doesn’t permanently colour hair. Wash pillow covers regularly and use an old towel as a pillow wrap when you oil overnight.

How to use neelibhringadi oil

  1. Patch test: a few drops behind the ear, left 48 hours. Itching, redness or bumps mean skip it.
  2. Warm: stand the bottle in a cup of warm water for 2 to 3 minutes. Test on your wrist; it should feel just warm.
  3. Amount: 1 to 2 teaspoons (5 to 10 ml) for short hair, up to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) for long hair.
  4. Apply: part hair in sections and press oil onto the scalp with fingertips. Massage gently for 5 minutes. Don’t scratch with nails.
  5. Leave: 1 to 2 hours is enough. Overnight is fine for dry hair, but not if you have dandruff or a greasy scalp.
  6. Wash: apply shampoo to dry, oiled hair first, then add water. Our guide to washing oil out without three shampoos has the trick.
  7. Judge: give breakage and dryness 6 to 8 weeks. Hair fall from the root needs causes checked, not more months of oil.

A cooler head in summer

The tradition rubs a few drops into the crown (the soft whorl at the top) at night. It won’t change your hair, but a slow 3-minute scalp massage before bed is a pleasant wind-down habit.

Worth knowing first

Skip it on a scalp with dandruff, red flaky patches or pimples; oil can feed the yeast behind dandruff. Coconut-based versions can cause tiny bumps along the hairline. Keep it out of eyes. On children, use plain oil instead; herbal blends add nothing and can irritate. See a doctor or dermatologist for round bald patches, hair coming out in clumps, a scalp that’s sore or scaly, sudden heavy shedding with tiredness or weight change, or thinning with irregular periods and acne.

How to pick a real bottle

  • Check the label lists neeli, bhringraj and amla, and names the base oil.
  • Expect a near-black, slightly thick oil. A thin, pale, perfumed oil is mostly carrier.
  • Avoid loose, unlabelled bottles; adulterated hair oils sometimes contain mineral oil and added fragrance.
  • In Pakistan, look for a DRAP enlistment number on imported herbal oils.
  • Because it contains milk solids, store it cool, closed and away from light; throw out if sour-smelling.

Did you know?

Bhringraj’s crushed leaves darken in the air, which is part of why it earned a reputation for blackening hair. And the indigo plant in this oil is the very one whose fermented leaves gave the world blue jeans dye before synthetic indigo replaced it.

Is neelibhringadi oil good for hair fall?

It’s good for breakage and dryness, like most oils. For shedding from the root, the cause matters more: iron, thyroid, recent illness, stress or genes. Get those checked if hair fall is heavy or has lasted more than 3 months.

Does neelibhringadi oil turn grey hair black?

No. The indigo in it is cooked into oil, not applied as a dye paste, so grey hair stays grey. For natural colour, henna followed by indigo paste actually dyes hair.

How to use neelibhringadi oil?

Warm a little, massage it into the scalp for 5 minutes, leave it 1 to 2 hours and shampoo. Two or three times a week is plenty. Patch test behind the ear first.

Can I leave neelibhringadi oil overnight?

Yes, if your scalp is dry and has no dandruff. Protect your pillow with an old towel. If you get dandruff, itching or bumps, keep it to an hour or two instead.

Neelibhringadi oil or bhringraj oil, which is better?

They’re similar, with neelibhringadi adding indigo, amla and milk. Neither has strong proof of regrowing hair. Pick the one you like using; consistency and scalp health matter more than the label.

Is neelibhringadi oil good for dandruff?

Usually not. Oil can feed the yeast behind dandruff and make flakes stick. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo first, and oil only the lengths of hair if they’re dry.

Does neelibhringadi oil help sleep?

The tradition says it cools the head and aids sleep. A slow scalp massage before bed is relaxing for many people, which may be what they feel. It’s not a remedy for insomnia.

Can children use neelibhringadi oil?

Plain coconut oil is a simpler choice for children. If you do use it, patch test, use a small amount and wash it out. Don’t use it on babies.

Can I use neelibhringadi oil during pregnancy?

As a scalp oil it’s unlikely to cause harm, but there’s no safety information. Patch test first. Hair shedding after childbirth is common and usually settles by itself within months.

How long does neelibhringadi oil take to work?

Softer, less brittle hair can show within 6 to 8 weeks. If you’re waiting for shedding to stop, check for causes rather than waiting longer than 3 months.

Does neelibhringadi oil cause hair fall?

Not directly, but heavy oiling and rough massage can pull out hairs that were already loose. A scalp reaction or bumps along the hairline means stop.
