Methi Oil for Hair (Fenugreek Oil): How to Make It, Honestly
Methi oil for hair is simply fenugreek seeds (methi dana) slowly warmed in coconut oil until the oil smells nutty and faintly of maple syrup. It’s cheap, easy and pleasant as a pre-wash oil. It won’t stop hair fall that comes from low iron, thyroid trouble or genes, and this guide is honest about that while showing you exactly how to make it.
Quick facts
- Ratio: 2 tablespoons (about 20 g) methi seeds to 100 ml coconut oil.
- Heat: lowest flame, 10 to 15 minutes, seeds golden brown, never black.
- Use: 1 to 2 hours before washing, 1 to 2 times a week.
- Keeps: about 2 months in a cool, dark cupboard.
- Skip if: you’re allergic to peanuts or chickpeas and react to methi, or the patch test itches.

What does methi oil do for hair? The three answers
What people say
The YouTube claim: methi oil stops hair fall in two weeks, grows baby hairs on a bald patch and turns grey hair black again.
What tradition says
In many Pakistani and North Indian homes, methi seeds were soaked overnight and ground into a slimy paste for the scalp, or crackled in hot coconut or sarson oil for a weekly champi. Ayurveda counts methi as warming and lists it among hair-friendly kitchen seeds; Unani hakeems used it in oils for a dry, flaky scalp.
Our honest take Worth it, for the right job
Coconut oil on its own is one of the few oils that soaks into the hair shaft well, which helps hair resist breaking when wet. Methi adds a pleasant smell and some of its slippery mucilage feel, mainly in the soaked-paste form. As a pre-wash conditioner, methi oil is a good, cheap habit.
What it can’t do is reverse pattern baldness or bring colour back to grey hair. Hair fall that’s sudden, patchy or heavy has a cause worth finding, and an oil is not that cause’s answer.
How do you make methi oil at home?
Low heat is the whole secret. Hot oil burns methi fast, and burnt methi smells bitter and leaves black specks in your hair.
- Measure 100 ml virgin coconut oil. If it’s solid in winter, warm the jar in a bowl of hot water first.
- Dry-roast nothing. Simply crush 2 tablespoons (about 20 g) of clean, dry methi seeds coarsely in a mortar or give them a 3-second pulse in a grinder.
- Pour the oil into a small steel pan, add the crushed seeds and set it on the lowest flame.
- Stir every minute for 10 to 15 minutes. You want gentle, tiny bubbles around the seeds, not a fry. The seeds turn golden brown and the oil smells nutty.
- If the seeds blacken or smoke rises, the batch is overdone. Bin it and start again.
- Turn the flame off, cover, and leave the seeds in the oil overnight to steep as it cools.
- Next morning, strain through a fine muslin cloth into a dry glass bottle. Squeeze the cloth to get the last of it out.
Optional: add a handful of fresh curry leaves, patted completely dry, in step 3. Wet leaves make the oil spit and shorten its life. Our Kerala hair oil recipe goes deeper on that blend.
The no-heat version
Put the crushed seeds and oil in a clean, dry glass jar, close it and leave it on a sunny windowsill for 2 weeks, shaking daily. Strain. It’s milder in smell, and there’s no risk of burning.
How do you apply methi oil, and how long do you leave it?
Use about 1 to 2 tablespoons for shoulder-length hair. Warm the bottle in hot water, never in the microwave, then test a drop on your wrist.
- Part your hair in sections and press oil onto the scalp with fingertips. Massage in small circles for 5 minutes. Don’t scratch with nails.
- Run what’s left on your palms down the lengths and ends, where hair is driest.
- Leave it on for 1 to 2 hours, then shampoo. Overnight is fine for dry scalps, but oily or dandruff-prone scalps do better with shorter times. Our guide on how long to keep oil in hair breaks this down by hair type.
- Once or twice a week is plenty. Daily oiling on an oily scalp can make flakes worse.
Methi oil and the methi paste mask do different jobs. The paste, made from soaked and ground seeds, gives slip and conditioning. Our methi hair mask guide and the methi dahi hair mask ratios cover those.
Patch test first
Rub a few drops of the finished oil behind one ear and leave it for 48 hours. Redness, itching or tiny bumps mean skip it. Methi belongs to the bean family, and people allergic to peanuts or chickpeas sometimes react to it too.
Does methi oil stop hair fall?
Not by itself. Shedding up to roughly 100 hairs a day is normal. Heavier shedding usually traces back to something inside the body.
- Common causes worth testing: low iron stores (ferritin), thyroid problems, low vitamin D or B12, and a big illness, fever, crash diet or childbirth two to three months earlier.
- Pattern hair loss (a widening parting, a receding hairline) is genetic and hormonal. Oils don’t change it. A dermatologist can explain the options that do.
- Breakage from rough combing, tight buns and heat looks like hair fall too. This is where oiling genuinely helps: oiled lengths snap less.
So methi oil is a fair habit for breakage and dryness. For true shedding, see our page on hair fall causes to test.
Myths about methi for hair
Myth: Methi oil turns white hair black again
Grey hair has lost its pigment cells at the root. No oil restores them. Henna and indigo can colour grey hair; methi can’t.
Myth: If your scalp tingles, it’s growing hair
Tingling is just the massage and warmth. It doesn’t mean new hair is coming, and stinging means irritation.
Myth: Leaving oil in for days works better
Oil left on a scalp for days collects dust and feeds the yeast linked to dandruff. A few hours is enough.
What does methi oil smell like, and does it linger?
It smells warm, nutty and a bit like maple syrup. That’s from a natural compound in fenugreek called sotolon, the same one that gives some maple syrups their aroma.
Did you know? Sotolon is strong enough that people who eat a lot of methi can notice a maple smell in their sweat. On hair, the scent mostly washes out with one good shampoo, though a faint note can stay on pillowcases.
How do you store methi oil?
Keep it in a dark glass bottle, tightly closed, away from the stove and sunlight. It lasts about 2 months. Coconut oil goes solid below about 24 °C, so stand the bottle in warm water in winter.
Throw it out if it smells sour, waxy or like old paint, or if you see any fuzz. That’s rancid or mouldy oil, and it will irritate the scalp.
Stop using methi oil if your scalp itches, burns or breaks out in bumps. Don’t apply it on open sores, scalp wounds or freshly treated (relaxed or bleached) hair. See a dermatologist for round bald patches, hair fall with a red, scaly or painful scalp, hair loss after a new medicine, or shedding that lasts beyond 3 months. Pregnant and breastfeeding women can use it as a hair oil, but avoid eating large amounts of methi without asking their doctor.
Methi oil for hair: your questions
How to make methi oil for hair at home?
Crush 2 tablespoons of methi seeds, warm them in 100 ml coconut oil on the lowest flame for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown, let it steep overnight, then strain into a glass bottle. Never let the seeds blacken.
Does methi oil really reduce hair fall?
It reduces breakage by conditioning the lengths, which many people read as less hair fall. It doesn’t fix shedding from low iron, thyroid issues or genetic thinning. Get those tested if fall is heavy.
How often should I apply methi oil?
Once or twice a week, 1 to 2 hours before washing. Oily or dandruff-prone scalps should keep it short and not go overnight.
Can I leave methi oil in my hair overnight?
Yes, if your scalp is dry and the patch test was clear. Cover your pillow with an old towel. If you get dandruff or pimples on the hairline, switch to a 1 to 2 hour application.
Methi oil ya methi pani, kaun sa better hai?
They do different things. Methi oil is a pre-wash conditioner. Methi water and soaked-seed paste give slip and a soft feel. Many people use the oil weekly and a paste mask occasionally.
Can methi oil help grey hair?
No. It can’t bring pigment back. If you want colour, henna (with indigo for darker shades) is the plant option, done after a patch test.
Which oil is best to mix with methi?
Coconut oil is the best base because it soaks into the hair shaft well. Mustard and til oil also work and suit a dry, flaky scalp in winter. Avoid using any essential oil undiluted in the mix.
Can I mix methi and kalonji in hair oil?
Yes. Add 1 tablespoon crushed kalonji to the same pan with the methi and keep the flame low. It adds smell rather than proven extra benefit, and the same patch test applies.
Is methi oil good for dandruff?
Mild flaking from dryness may improve with gentle oiling. Real dandruff is linked to a scalp yeast that feeds on oil, so heavy oiling can make it worse. Our dandruff guide has better first steps.
Why does my hair smell like maple syrup after methi oil?
That’s sotolon, a natural aroma compound in fenugreek. It’s harmless and usually goes with one shampoo.
Can kids use methi oil on their hair?
Older children can have it as a gentle weekly oil after a patch test. Keep it out of eyes. Babies don’t need hair oils at all.
How long does homemade methi oil last?
About 2 months in a closed, dark bottle away from heat. Throw it away if it smells sour or waxy.
Can I use methi oil with onion juice?
You can, but onion juice is harsh on some scalps and the smell is strong. Patch test the mix and rinse well. Our onion juice and oiling guide covers it.
