Khamira Marwareed: Pearls, Coral and Gems in Unani Tonics

Why does a jar of khamira marwareed cost several times a plain one? Marwareed (pearl), marjan (coral) and jawahar (gems) are mostly the price of a name: pearl and coral powder are largely calcium carbonate, the same mineral as chalk and eggshell, and gems add rarity, not proven health.

Before you buy

  • Marwareed: pearl, in Unani as powder (sufoof), kushta (calcined ash) or in khamira and habb (pills).
  • Marjan: red coral; black corals are on CITES Appendix II, and the precious red coral genus Corallium is on Appendix III (listed by China).
  • Jawahar: the “jewels” word on labels, often pearl, ruby (yaqoot), emerald (zamurrad) or gold and silver leaf.
  • Main worries: heavy metals in calcined (kushta) products, sugar in khamiras, and unregistered sellers.

What are marwareed, marjan and jawahar in Unani medicine?

A pearl forms when an oyster or mussel coats an irritant in thin layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl). Nacre is mostly calcium carbonate held together with a little protein. That’s it. Most pearls sold today are cultured: a farmer places a bead or tissue inside the shellfish to start the process. Freshwater cultured pearls are the cheapest; large, round, natural saltwater pearls are rare and costly.

Coral is the stony skeleton of tiny sea animals. Not a plant. Red and pink “precious” coral, prized for jewellery and marjan, is slow-growing and harvested from deep water. Its skeleton, too, is mostly calcium carbonate, which means that once you strip away the romance, the history and the deep-sea harvest, a spoon of coral powder and a spoon of pearl powder are chemically close cousins of the chalk on a school blackboard. Same mineral.

In Unani pharmacy these are ground very fine, rubbed with rose water (a process called hal), or burned into kushta and mixed into compounds: khamira marwareed, habb-e-marwareed, mufarreh yaqooti and others. “Khas” or “jawahar wala” on the label usually means extra precious ingredients.

What do people say, what does tradition say, and what’s our honest take?

The famous claim

Khamira marwareed strengthens the heart and brain, ends weakness and palpitations, and the more jewels a product has, the stronger it works. Searches like “marwareed khas ke fayde” and “habbe marwareed benefits” are everywhere.

How it was used

Classical Unani texts class pearl as cold and dry and a mufarreh (exhilarant): a cheering, strengthening agent for the heart and mind. Marjan was used similarly and as a “blood-binding” ingredient. Gems were thought to carry their qualities into the body, and kings’ physicians made jewelled compounds as much to honour the patient as anything else.

Our honest take

It depends A pearl ground to powder gives you calcium carbonate, much like a cheap calcium tablet or a crushed eggshell, at a far higher price. There’s no good modern evidence that pearl, coral or gems strengthen the heart or the brain. A registered khamira may suit someone who values the tradition, but the jewelled version isn’t proven to work better than the plain one, as we found looking at mufarreh yaqooti. Palpitations and weakness deserve a proper check first. Always.

Why are jewelled compounds so expensive?

  • The raw material. Natural pearls and good coral are scarce and sold by the carat, not the kilo.
  • Labour. Hal (grinding with rose water for many hours) and kushta-making are slow, skilled work.
  • Coral law and supply. Black corals need CITES permits for international trade, and red coral beds have been heavily fished, so supply is limited.
  • The word “khas”. Labels such as khas, jawahar wala and shahi carry a premium on their own.
  • What you can’t see. A buyer can’t check how much pearl, or which grade, is in a jar. Price signals the claim, not the content.
You can’t see a pearl in a spoon of khamira, so you’re paying for trust.

What did these cost before, and what to expect now?

We couldn’t find a dated public record (news archive, customs data or market report) of what loose marwareed powder or kushta marwareed sold for in Pakistan or India years ago, so we won’t invent one. In broad terms, branded khamira marwareed and khas versions have risen in price along with general medicine prices and the cost of gold and silver leaf. Treat this as a guide for October 2026, not a quote; check the printed retail price on the pack.

How do you buy honestly and spot fakes?

  1. Buy from a pharmacy or a known Unani dawakhana, not a loose powder from social media.
  2. Check the DRAP registration or enlistment number in Pakistan, or the AYUSH licence in India, plus batch number and expiry.
  3. Read the ingredient list for pearl, coral or gem names and where possible their share.
  4. Look for the sugar or honey base; khamiras are often mostly sugar.
  5. For jewellery pearls, a real pearl feels slightly gritty when rubbed gently on the front teeth; plastic or glass feels smooth. Coral fakes are often dyed bone, glass or plastic; a gem lab gives the firm answer.

How are they used, and how much?

For any marwareed, marjan or jawahar compound taken by mouth, the pack or a qualified practitioner sets the amount. We don’t give one. If you also take a calcium supplement, tell your doctor, because pearl and coral add more calcium carbonate.

As jewellery, pearls are cleaned with a soft, damp cloth after wearing, and kept away from perfume, vinegar and lemon, which etch the surface.

What are the risks?

Take care if

Kushta (calcined) products can carry lead, mercury or arsenic; a US analysis of Ayurvedic medicines bought online found about one in five contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic, and metal-based rasa shastra products were more often affected. Avoid loose kushta and unregistered powders, and read our guides to kushta and heavy metals and heavy-metal signs and tests. People with diabetes should note the sugar base, covered in khameera marwareed and the sugar. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, people with kidney stones or kidney disease, and anyone on thyroid medicine, antibiotics or heart medicine should ask their doctor first, since calcium can interfere with some medicines. Chest pain, fainting, a fast irregular heartbeat or breathlessness need urgent medical care, not a tonic.

Marwareed and khamira questions people ask

What are khamira marwareed benefits?

In Unani tradition it’s a heart and brain tonic for weakness and palpitations. There’s no good modern evidence behind those claims, and the pearl in it is mainly calcium carbonate. Get palpitations checked by a doctor first.

What is khamira marwareed price in Pakistan?

Prices change with brand, size and whether it’s a khas version, so check the printed retail price on the pack. We don’t quote a figure because we couldn’t find a dated, reliable source.

What are khamira marwareed side effects?

The main ones come from its sugar base, which matters for diabetes and weight, and from unregistered products that may contain heavy metals. Calcium in pearl can also interact with some medicines.

Marwareed kya hota hai?

Marwareed is the Urdu and Persian word for pearl. In Unani it’s used as a fine powder, a calcined kushta, or inside khamiras and habb.

What is kushta marwareed?

It’s pearl burned and processed into ash. Kushta preparations can carry heavy metals depending on how they’re made, so avoid loose, unregistered ones and talk to a doctor before using any.

Habbe marwareed uses?

Tradition gives these pearl pills for weakness and palpitations. The amount comes from the pack or a qualified practitioner, and any heart symptom needs a medical check.

Is marjan (coral) legal to buy?

Coral jewellery and medicine are sold in many places, but black corals need CITES permits for international trade and China lists the red coral genus on Appendix III. Rules differ by country, so check before bringing coral across a border.

Is pearl powder just calcium?

Mostly, yes. Pearl is largely calcium carbonate with a little protein. That’s why it’s no substitute for a doctor-advised calcium plan.

What does marwareed khas mean?

“Khas” means special. It usually signals more pearl or extra precious ingredients, and a higher price, not proven extra benefit.

Can children take khamira marwareed?

Only if a doctor agrees. Children are more sensitive to any heavy-metal contamination, and the sugar base isn’t ideal.
