Lohasava Benefits for Anaemia: Iron Tonic vs Iron Tablets

Is lohasava as good as iron tablets for anaemia? Short answer: nobody can tell you, because the iron in it isn’t measured the way a tablet’s is, and anaemia isn’t one disease. Lohasava (Loha Asav) is a fermented Ayurvedic tonic that contains processed iron, alcohol and sugar. This guide explains what it is, why a blood test and a cause come first, and the child-safety warning every iron product carries.

What is lohasava?

Loha means iron. Lohasava is an asava, a fermented medicine, that usually lists purified iron powder or iron ash (loha churna or loha bhasma) along with herbs. The common companions are trikatu (dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper), triphala, chitrak (plumbago root), and nagarmotha, fermented with jaggery, honey and dhataki flowers.

Fermentation makes alcohol inside the bottle. Labels state it as “self-generated alcohol”, usually a few per cent. The jaggery and honey leave sugar behind.

  • Iron: present, but the amount you actually absorb isn’t stated on most bottles.
  • Alcohol: present; check the figure.
  • Sugar: present.
  • Pepper and chitrak: pungent, and hard on some stomachs.

What people say, what tradition says, and our honest take

What people say

“Lohasava khoon badhata hai.” It’s bought for anaemia, pale skin, tiredness, heavy periods, and even for pregnant women and children who look weak. It’s often seen as the gentle, natural swap for iron tablets.

What tradition says

What elders did

Ayurvedic texts list lohasava for pandu (a state of paleness much like anaemia), an enlarged liver or spleen, swelling, piles and poor digestion. Iron was purified by repeated heating and quenching in herbal liquids before use, a long process meant to make it safe and absorbable.

Our honest take

Skip as a first choice for proven iron deficiency. Iron tablets and syrups have known strengths, known absorption and a plan to recheck your blood. Lohasava doesn’t come with any of that. It may contribute some iron, but you can’t tell how much, and it adds alcohol and sugar on top.

With anaemia, the real question isn’t “which tonic?”. It’s “why is my blood low?”

Why anaemia needs a test and a cause first

Feeling pale and tired doesn’t prove anaemia, and anaemia doesn’t prove low iron. Here’s what a doctor usually checks:

  • CBC (complete blood count): shows haemoglobin and whether red cells are small (iron) or large (B12 or folate).
  • Ferritin: your iron store. It can be low long before haemoglobin falls. Our ferritin vs haemoglobin guide explains why.
  • The cause: heavy periods, worms, poor diet, pregnancy, coeliac disease, stomach ulcers, or slow bleeding from the gut in older adults.

Iron of any kind given to a man or a woman after menopause without a cause search can hide a bleeding bowel. And some anaemias, such as thalassaemia trait (common in Pakistan and India), aren’t iron problems at all. Extra iron doesn’t help them and can build up.

Myth: “Iron from a tonic is natural, so it doesn’t cause side effects”

Iron is iron. Whatever the source, it can cause nausea, stomach pain, constipation or loose stools, and it turns stools dark or black. That dark colour is expected. A sticky, tar-black stool with a bad smell, especially with dizziness, can be bleeding and needs a doctor the same day.

Myth: “Pregnant women should drink a loha tonic”

Pregnancy needs more iron, and anaemia in pregnancy matters. That’s exactly why it’s handled by your doctor with tested iron and regular blood checks. An alcohol-containing tonic is not a pregnancy product.

Keep every iron product away from children

Iron poisoning is a real danger for small children, and a sweet syrup or tonic is easy for them to drink. Store lohasava, iron tablets and iron syrups locked up, out of reach. If a child swallows any, go to hospital straight away even if they seem fine, and bring the bottle; early signs are vomiting, belly pain and diarrhoea, sometimes with blood. Lohasava is not for children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, thalassaemia or haemochromatosis, stomach ulcers, people avoiding alcohol, or people with diabetes without advice. Iron also blocks some antibiotics and thyroid tablets, so ask a pharmacist about timing. We don’t give a dose: the label or a qualified practitioner sets it.

What actually raises iron, alongside your doctor’s plan

  1. Get a CBC and ferritin, and ask your doctor what the cause is.
  2. If iron is prescribed, take it as the pack or doctor says, and recheck your blood after the agreed weeks.
  3. Eat iron foods most days: 1 katori daal or chana, 100 g of meat, liver or chicken a few times a week, eggs, and dark greens.
  4. Add vitamin C at the same meal: half a lemon squeezed over daal, a guava, or kachumber salad.
  5. Keep tea and coffee an hour away from iron meals and tablets.
  6. Deworm the household if your doctor advises it.

Lohasava questions people ask

What are lohasava benefits?

Traditionally it’s used for paleness, anaemia, an enlarged liver or spleen and poor digestion. It contains iron, so it may add some, but the amount isn’t clearly stated and there’s no good proof it matches iron tablets.

Is lohasava good for anaemia?

Not as a first choice. Anaemia needs a test and a cause. If it’s iron deficiency, tablets or syrup with known strength and a blood recheck are the reliable route.

Does lohasava contain alcohol?

Yes. Fermentation makes alcohol inside the bottle, usually a few per cent. The label states it as self-generated alcohol.

Lohasava side effects?

Nausea, acidity, stomach pain, constipation and black stools are common with any iron. Tar-like black stools with dizziness can mean bleeding; see a doctor that day.

Does lohasava make stool black?

It can, because of the iron, and that’s expected. If the stool is sticky and tar-like, smells very bad, or you feel faint, get checked the same day.

Can lohasava be given to children?

No. It contains alcohol, and iron can poison small children. A child with suspected anaemia needs a blood test and a doctor’s plan.

Can I take lohasava in pregnancy?

No. Iron in pregnancy should be doctor-led with tested products and blood checks, and the tonic contains alcohol.

How fast does haemoglobin rise with iron?

With proper iron treatment, haemoglobin usually starts rising within a few weeks. Stores take longer, so doctors often continue for some months and recheck. No tonic speeds that up.

Lohasava or iron tablets: which is better?

Iron tablets, for a proven deficiency, because the dose is known and the result is checked. Lohasava’s iron content and absorption aren’t clear, and it adds alcohol and sugar.

Can I take lohasava with tea?

Tea reduces iron absorption from any source. Keep tea and coffee about an hour away from iron-rich meals, tonics or tablets.

Can men take lohasava for weakness?

A man with low iron needs a cause search first, because blood loss from the gut is a common hidden reason. Get tested before taking any iron product.
