Jodo Ka Dard Ayurvedic Dawa: Hidden Steroids and Moon Face

It works in two days. The knees that ached for years suddenly don’t, the back loosens, and the little paper packets of “jadi booti” powder from the market or the online page start to feel like a miracle. Then, weeks later, the face rounds out, the sugar reading climbs and the ankles swell. When a jodo ka dard ayurvedic dawa or kamar dard ayurvedic medicine works that fast, the likeliest reason is not a herb at all: it is a hidden steroid, and the most important thing to know is that you must not stop it suddenly.

Why a “herbal” powder can work overnight

Herbs are slow. Steroids such as dexamethasone, prednisolone or betamethasone are different: they switch off inflammation powerfully within a day or two, which is why doctors use them carefully, for short periods, with a plan to stop. Anti-inflammatory painkillers are sometimes added as well, so the powder hits pain from two directions at once and the buyer, who paid a few hundred rupees for a paper packet, goes home convinced that the old man at the stall knows something the doctors don’t.

Undeclared steroids and painkillers have been found in unlabelled and falsely labelled “herbal” pain products sold in Pakistan and India, especially loose powders, unbranded capsules and “hakeem’s own” packets. The same trick appears in herbal weight gainers; see herbal weight gainers and hidden steroids.

Relief that fast is a clue, not a blessing.

The short version

  • Warning signs of a laced product: dramatic relief within days, no proper label, sold loose or by a person rather than a pharmacy.
  • Warning signs in your body: round “moon” face, weight gain, rising sugar or BP, easy bruising, stretch marks, acid pain.
  • Never: stop suddenly after weeks of use.
  • Do: keep the packet, see a doctor, taper under supervision.

Signs of hidden steroid use

They build slowly. You may notice some of these in yourself or in an elderly parent who has been “doing so well” on a powder:

  • Moon face: the face becomes round and puffy, often with a fat pad at the back of the neck.
  • Weight gain around the belly, with thin arms and legs.
  • High blood sugar: new diabetes, or known diabetes suddenly out of control.
  • Raised blood pressure and ankle swelling.
  • Skin changes: thin skin, easy bruising, wide purple stretch marks, slow-healing wounds, acne.
  • Stomach pain, acidity, black stools or vomiting blood, especially if painkillers were added too.
  • Mood and sleep changes, weak thigh muscles, frequent infections, and in the longer term, thinning bones and cataracts.

One sign proves little. Several together, in someone taking a powder that works dramatically, is a strong pattern.

Why you must not stop suddenly

Taken for more than a few weeks, steroids tell the adrenal glands to stop making the body’s own cortisol, the hormone that keeps blood pressure, blood sugar and energy steady under stress, so that when the outside supply stops abruptly the body is left with almost none, and the result can be an adrenal crisis.

That’s an emergency.

Signs of adrenal crisis include severe weakness, vomiting, belly pain, dizziness or fainting, low blood pressure and confusion. Infection or surgery can trigger it too. If this happens, go to emergency and say the person has been taking a product that may contain steroids.

Before you do anything else

Do not stop the powder suddenly if it has been taken for more than about three weeks. Keep the packet and anything with a name or number on it. See a doctor soon, and take the packet; they may check your blood sugar, blood pressure and sometimes a morning cortisol level, and plan a gradual reduction with a prescribed steroid so your own adrenals can wake up. Emergency now for severe weakness, repeated vomiting, fainting or confusion; black stools or vomiting blood; or chest pain. Diabetes, BP or heart disease: tell your doctor at once, as your medicines may need adjusting. Pregnancy: stop no medicine on your own, and see your doctor the same week.

How to taper safely with a doctor

A doctor who suspects hidden steroid use usually replaces the unknown powder with a known amount of a prescribed steroid, then lowers it step by step over weeks or longer, depending on how long you’ve been taking it. Their schedule, not yours.

  1. Write down how long you’ve taken the product, how often, and where you bought it.
  2. Bring the packet, a photo of any label, and your recent sugar and BP readings.
  3. Ask whether you need a steroid card or emergency plan while tapering, in case of illness.
  4. During the taper, joint pain may return, which is unwelcome but useful, because it tells you the original problem was never solved and gives you and your doctor something real to plan around.
  5. Get your sugar and BP rechecked after the taper; ask whether you need a bone density check if use went on for many months.

Jodo ka dard ayurvedic dawa: choosing a safer product

If you still want an herbal product for joint pain, choose one that can be traced and don’t expect it to act like a steroid.

  • Only buy labelled products with a maker’s name and address, full ingredient list, batch number and expiry.
  • Look for a DRAP enlistment number in Pakistan or an AYUSH licence line in India; see how to check DRAP enlistment.
  • Refuse loose powders, “hakeem’s special” unlabelled packets and products sold only through social media messages.
  • Be suspicious of any claim like “results in 24 hours”, “permanent relief” or “no need for operation”.
  • Tell your doctor exactly what you take. A one-page list helps; see telling your doctor about herbal medicines.

Some traditional joint products carry their own risks even when honestly labelled; majoon suranjan contains colchicum, for instance.

The traditional view

A good hakeem or vaidya treated joint pain slowly: diet, oil massage, warmth, movement and herbs over months, with the expectation of gradual easing. The idea that a genuine herbal remedy gives complete relief in two days is not part of the tradition at all. That’s the adulterators’ promise.

What actually helps knees and backs

Move. For knee osteoarthritis, strengthening the thigh muscles and, if you’re heavier than you’d like, losing even a few kilos takes real load off the joint; see knee pain and weight. Back pain? Keep moving. Use heat. A pharmacist can advise on painkiller gels and tablets that suit your stomach, kidneys and heart. And pain with fever, numbness, leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, weight loss or night pain needs a doctor promptly. Hidden steroids in joint pain dawa: your questions

Why does my jodo ka dard ayurvedic dawa work so fast?

Genuine herbs for joint pain act slowly and modestly. Dramatic relief within a day or two suggests a hidden steroid or painkiller. Don’t stop suddenly if you’ve used it for weeks; keep the packet and see a doctor.

How do I know if my kamar dard ayurvedic medicine has steroids?

You can’t tell by looking. Clues are dramatic fast relief, no proper label, and body changes like a round face, weight gain, rising sugar or BP and easy bruising. A doctor can assess you, and some labs can test the product.

What is moon face?

It is a round, puffy face caused by fat redistribution from long-term steroid use, often with a fat pad behind the neck and weight around the belly. It usually improves slowly after steroids are tapered off.

Can I just stop the powder?

Not if you’ve taken it for more than about three weeks. Your body may have stopped making its own cortisol, and sudden stopping can cause adrenal crisis. See a doctor who can taper you safely.

What are the signs of adrenal crisis?

Severe weakness, vomiting, belly pain, dizziness or fainting, low blood pressure and confusion. It’s an emergency. Go to hospital and say the person may have been taking a steroid-containing product.

Will my sugar go back to normal?

Often it improves after the steroid is tapered, but not always. Some people are left with diabetes that needs ongoing care. Keep checking your sugar and follow your doctor’s advice.

Is it safe for an elderly parent who has been taking it for months?

Older people are especially at risk of bone thinning, high sugar, infections and stomach bleeding. Don’t stop it abruptly. Book a doctor’s visit soon and take the packet along.

Can hidden painkillers in these powders cause harm?

Yes. Undeclared anti-inflammatory painkillers can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding, kidney damage and raised BP, especially with steroids, in older people and with blood thinners.

Where can I report a suspected laced product?

In Pakistan, report to DRAP; in India, to the national pharmacovigilance programme. Keep the packet, batch details and where you bought it. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you file it.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

No unlabelled product is safe in pregnancy. If you’ve been taking one, don’t stop on your own; see your doctor this week so they can check you and plan any taper safely.
