Henna and Indigo for Beard: The Two-Step Method for Black

Green beard? That’s what happens when indigo lands on white hair with no henna underneath. Henna and indigo for beard works as a two-step: henna first for a red base, rinse, then indigo (neel) for 1 to 2 hours to turn that red into dark brown or black. Here’s the exact method, the ratios for brown versus black, and why the one-bowl shortcut so often goes wrong.

Before you start

  • Step 1: pure henna paste, rested 4 to 8 hours, on the beard 1 to 2 hours or longer.
  • Step 2: fresh indigo paste, mixed just before use, on the beard 1 to 2 hours.
  • Powder for a full beard: about 30 g henna, then 30 g indigo.
  • Final colour shows: after about 48 to 72 hours.
  • Patch test: both powders, 48 hours before.

Why does indigo need henna first?

Indigo is blue. That’s it.

On dark hair you’d never notice, but on a white beard pure indigo sits there as a navy, teal or plain green tint, because there’s no warm colour underneath for the blue to mix with, and anyone who has tried a single quick coat of neel on a grey moustache has seen it. Henna supplies that warm layer. Lawsone (henna’s orange-red dye) binds first, then indigotin (indigo’s blue dye) sits over it, and red under blue reads to the eye as brown or black.

So the order matters. Henna then indigo gives depth. Indigo then henna mostly gives a muddy red.

What people say, what tradition says, and our honest take

What people say: neel alone gives black, a pinch of salt is the “secret”, and a mixed bowl of henna and indigo saves you a whole afternoon.

The traditional view

Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) has dyed cloth in South Asia for thousands of years, and the word indigo itself comes from the Greek for “from India”. Using it on hair after henna is an old practice across Iran, the Gulf and the subcontinent, and a pinch of salt in the indigo bowl is passed down in many families.

Our honest take Worth it for the two-step, Depends for the one-step. Two-step gives the most reliable dark result on white hair. Salt is harmless and some people swear it deepens the shade, though nobody has shown it makes a real difference, so treat it as optional. One-bowl mixes work for a soft brown but very often disappoint people chasing black.

How to dye a beard black with henna and indigo, step by step

Step 1: the henna base

  1. Mix about 30 g of pure henna with roughly 60 to 80 ml of warm water to a thick yoghurt texture. Cover and rest 4 to 8 hours at room temperature.
  2. Wash and fully dry the beard. Put petroleum jelly along the cheek, neck and lip lines, keeping it off the hairs.
  3. Wear gloves, coat every hair to the root, wrap loosely in cling film and leave 1 to 2 hours. Many men with coarse beards go to 3.
  4. Rinse with plain water only. No shampoo. The beard will look bright orange. That’s correct.

Full detail on the henna stage, including how to tell when the paste is ready, is in our mehndi for beard guide.

Step 2: the indigo layer

  1. You can do this straight after rinsing the henna, or the next day; either works.
  2. Put about 30 g of indigo powder in a bowl, add a small pinch of salt if you like, then stir in warm (not hot) water, around 60 to 70 ml, until it’s like thick yoghurt.
  3. Use it within about 15 to 30 minutes. Indigo, unlike henna, needs no rest time and loses strength the longer it sits.
  4. Apply over the henna the same way, root to tip, with fresh petroleum jelly at the edges. Indigo stains skin blue-grey.
  5. Wrap and leave 1 to 2 hours.
  6. Rinse with plain water. Skip shampoo for 48 hours; the colour will look slightly blue or uneven at first and settles over 2 to 3 days.

Can’t spare two afternoons?

Mix the henna the night before. Apply it after breakfast, rinse before lunch, mix the indigo fresh and you’re done by mid-afternoon.

How much henna and indigo for brown versus black?

The two-step above aims for black. For lighter shades, people mix the two powders into one bowl, and this is where ratios come in.

Shade you wantMethodHenna : indigo
Copper to auburnHenna only1 : 0
Light to medium brownOne bowl2 : 1 or 1 : 1
Dark brownOne bowl1 : 2
Darkest brown to blackTwo stepsFull henna, then full indigo

For a one-bowl mix, rest the henna first for its full dye release, then stir in freshly mixed indigo and apply within about 30 minutes.

A word of honesty about those ratios: everyone’s beard is different, white hairs take colour differently from salt-and-pepper ones, and a 1 : 2 mix that gives one man a rich espresso may give another a khaki that looks faintly green in daylight, so strand test on a few trimmed hairs before you trust any number.

Why did my beard go green or patchy?

  • Too little henna under the indigo. The red base was thin, so blue showed through. Redo henna, then indigo.
  • Stale indigo. Indigo that’s old, damp or sat mixed too long gives weak, greenish colour.
  • You judged it on day one. Fresh indigo often looks blue or teal and deepens over 2 to 3 days as it oxidises (reacts with air).
  • Uneven coverage. Coarse hair needs paste worked in against the grain, not just patted on top.

Indigo also fades sooner than henna. After a few weeks the beard can drift toward brown or even a faint green, and many men refresh with indigo alone (over hair that already holds henna) every 2 to 4 weeks.

Myth: “black henna” is henna and indigo premixed

Sometimes a box called black henna or kali mehndi is honestly a henna and indigo blend. Often it isn’t. If a product promises black in 10 to 30 minutes, turns black in the bowl, or lists anything beyond henna, indigo and perhaps amla or cassia, assume PPD (para-phenylenediamine, the chemical in permanent hair dye) or metallic salts until proven otherwise.

PPD on the face can blister, scar and leave a lifelong allergy. Real plant indigo takes an hour or more and does nothing in a few minutes. Our PPD and black mehndi guide explains the reaction and the patch test in detail.

How to buy real indigo powder

Look for a single ingredient, Indigofera tinctoria. Good indigo is a dark greenish-blue powder, not black. Mixed with water it turns blue-green, and a film on the surface can look coppery.

Keep it bone dry. Indigo hates moisture, so store it airtight away from the bathroom steam, and use within about a year.

Did you know? The indigo plant’s leaves are green. The blue only appears when the dye reacts with oxygen, which is why freshly rinsed hair keeps darkening for days.

Take care if

Patch test both powders 48 hours before you start: a dab of each behind the ear, left for the full time, then rinsed. Itching, redness or bumps means don’t use it. Keep paste out of your eyes and off your lips; rinse with plenty of clean water if any gets in. Don’t use either on broken skin, a rash or inflamed bumps. People with G6PD deficiency should ask a doctor before using henna, and keep all dye powders away from children. Swelling of the face or lips, blisters or wheezing after any dye means wash it off and get urgent medical help.

Henna and indigo for beard: your questions

How to use henna and indigo for beard?

Two steps. Apply rested henna for 1 to 2 hours and rinse, then apply freshly mixed indigo for 1 to 2 hours and rinse. Avoid shampoo for 48 hours while the colour settles.

Can I mix henna and indigo together for my beard?

Yes, for brown shades. A one-bowl mix gives light to dark brown depending on the ratio. For the darkest result on white hair, the two-step method is more reliable.

Does henna and indigo cover grey beard hair?

Yes. Done as two steps, it covers white and grey hair well, though very resistant white hairs may need a second round a week later.

How long should I leave indigo on my beard?

One to two hours. Keep it wrapped so it doesn’t dry, because dry indigo stops working.

Why did indigo turn my beard green?

Usually there wasn’t enough henna underneath. Blue on white hair looks green or teal. Redo the henna, then indigo, and give it 2 to 3 days to deepen.

Should I add salt to indigo?

It’s optional. A pinch is a common tradition and harmless, but the colour depends far more on fresh powder, a good henna base and enough time.

Can I do henna and indigo on the same day?

Yes. Rinse the henna with water only and apply indigo straight after. Some people prefer to wait until the next day; both work.

How long does a henna and indigo beard last?

The colour itself lasts weeks, but new white roots appear in 2 to 3 weeks. Indigo fades before henna does, so most men refresh every 2 to 4 weeks.

Is indigo powder safe for a beard?

Pure indigo is generally gentle, but allergy is possible, so patch test. Never use a product that colours black in minutes; that points to PPD.

Can I shampoo after henna and indigo?

Wait 48 hours. Shampooing too soon can leave the colour lighter and patchy while the indigo is still settling.

Can I use indigo alone on a grey beard?

Not on white hair. Alone it gives blue or green. On a beard that already has henna, indigo alone works well for touch-ups.
