Ferritin Normal Range: Low Stores, Hair Fall and Fatigue
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, so the ferritin normal range on your report is really a reading of your iron savings account. Savings can run low while your haemoglobin still looks fine, and they can look healthy during an infection even when they are not. The range differs by lab and by sex, so read your result against the one printed beside it.
The short version
- Ferritin measures: stored iron, mostly in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.
- Low ferritin: points to low iron stores, which can come before anaemia shows up on a CBC.
- High ferritin: can mean too much iron, but inflammation, infection, fatty liver and other conditions raise it too.
- Ranges: differ by lab, sex and age. Use the range printed on your report.

What does a ferritin test show?
Picture iron as money. Haemoglobin is the cash in your wallet, ready to carry oxygen. Ferritin is the savings account in the bank. When iron runs short, the body keeps the wallet full as long as it can by drawing down savings, so ferritin falls first and haemoglobin falls later. That is why ferritin can catch low iron early, and it is the reason the parent guide, ferritin versus haemoglobin, matters when haemoglobin looks normal.
Ferritin is often ordered with other iron tests. Your doctor may ask you to fast overnight for the sample, usually 12 hours, so follow the lab slip.
What is the ferritin normal range for women and men?
No single range suits every lab, and women usually have a lower range than men because of periods and pregnancy. The honest answer is to read the printed range on your report and note the units. Be wary of websites that give one number for everyone, and of “optimal” figures that your lab’s range does not use. Whether a result in the low part of the range is enough for you, for example when you have hair fall or tiredness, is a question for your doctor, who can look at your symptoms and other tests together.
| Ferritin result | What it may point to | Often looked at next |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Low iron stores, from heavy periods, low intake, poor absorption, bleeding or pregnancy | CBC, iron studies, cause of blood loss |
| Within range | Usually enough stores, though inflammation can hide a low value | CRP if the result looks too good for your symptoms |
| High | Too much iron, or inflammation, infection, liver disease, alcohol use, obesity, an overactive thyroid | Transferrin saturation, liver tests, CRP |
Can low ferritin cause hair fall and tiredness?
It can be part of the picture. Tiredness, breathlessness, palpitations and paler skin are the usual signs of iron deficiency, and noticing more hair coming out in the brush is a less common one. But hair fall has many causes, including a recent illness, childbirth, crash dieting and stress, and low ferritin may be one of several. If your hair is shedding, do not assume ferritin explains it. The hair fall and iron guide goes through the full list.
Why can ferritin look normal when iron is low?
Ferritin is an acute phase protein, which means it rises when the body is inflamed. An infection, a recent surgery, fatty liver, autoimmune disease or obesity can all push ferritin up without any extra iron in the body. A value that falls inside the normal range during an infection may therefore be hiding low stores.
Pair a surprising ferritin with CRP
If your ferritin looks normal but you are tired, pale or losing hair, or it is high without a clear reason, ask whether a CRP test can be added. CRP shows inflammation, which tells your doctor how far to trust the ferritin number. The CRP report guide explains it. Also ask for iron studies: the TIBC and transferrin guide covers the second half of the picture.
What can make ferritin high?
- Inflammation and infection: the commonest everyday reason.
- Liver disease and fatty liver: much of the body’s ferritin is stored in the liver.
- Alcohol use, obesity, autoimmune conditions and an overactive thyroid.
- Too much iron in the body: less common, and diagnosed with more tests, not with ferritin alone.
- Some medicines: your doctor reviews these.
A ferritin of 300 or more on a lab with a typical range needs a doctor’s interpretation, not a diet. Do not start or stop iron products on your own, and do not donate or avoid donating blood on the basis of this page.
What can make ferritin low?
The big one is blood loss. Heavy periods and pregnancy are very common causes, and bleeding in the stomach or bowel, for example from ulcers, piles or regular painkiller use, is another. Low dietary iron and poor absorption matter too. If you have heavy periods, the heavy periods and anaemia guide lists the warning signs. A low ferritin with no obvious cause deserves a look for hidden bleeding.
Limits and when to see a doctor
This page explains a report. It does not say why your ferritin is off, and it gives no iron pill advice: the product, amount and length of use are set by your doctor or pharmacist, who also checks for the cause. See a doctor soon for breathlessness on mild effort, palpitations, dizziness, pale skin and nails, very heavy or prolonged periods, black or tarry stools, blood in stools, or unexplained weight loss. A high ferritin with joint pain, dark skin tone change or abdominal pain needs a prompt review.

Ferritin report questions people ask
What is the ferritin normal range for females?
It depends on the lab, and women’s ranges generally start lower than men’s. Use the range printed on your own report and the units shown.
Can low ferritin cause hair fall?
It can contribute, since hair loss is a recognised, if less common, sign of iron deficiency. Hair fall has many other causes, so ferritin is one piece, not the whole answer.
Is ferritin 15 low?
On many lab ranges it falls at or below the lower limit, which would suggest low stores. Check the printed range and ask your doctor, because units and cutoffs differ.
What causes high ferritin?
Inflammation or infection, fatty liver and other liver disease, alcohol use, obesity, autoimmune disease and an overactive thyroid can all raise it. Real iron overload is less common and needs more tests.
What does a ferritin of 300 mean?
It is above the range at many labs, and the cause is often inflammation or liver related, not extra iron. Your doctor will add transferrin saturation and other tests.
Is ferritin 30 enough?
Whether a value near the lower part of the range is enough depends on your symptoms and the other tests. That is a conversation for your doctor, not a number to settle alone.
What is the difference between ferritin and an iron test?
Ferritin shows stored iron, while a serum iron test shows iron circulating at that moment, which swings with meals and time of day. Doctors usually read both, plus transferrin.
Can low ferritin cause fatigue even with normal haemoglobin?
It can be associated with tiredness, because stores run down before haemoglobin falls. Tiredness has many causes, so your doctor will look at the whole picture.
Do I need to fast for a ferritin test?
Your provider may ask for an overnight fast, often about 12 hours, especially if other tests are drawn together. Follow the instructions on your lab slip.
