Eye Makeup Safety: Kajal, Mascara and Eyeliner Habits

Most eye makeup trouble comes from three habits: keeping products too long, sharing them, and going to bed with them on. Fix those and you remove most of the risk without giving up kajal, mascara or liner.

Quick facts

  • Mascara life: manufacturers usually say discard it two to four months after purchase.
  • Sharing: never, not even with a best friend or a sister.
  • After an eye infection: bin every eye product you were using.
  • Bedtime: remove it all, every night.

How long can you use mascara?

The FDA says manufacturers usually recommend throwing mascara away two to four months after purchase. Every time the wand goes back into the tube it carries a few bacteria from your lashes and fingers. The tube is dark, slightly damp and closed, which is a comfortable home for them. Liquid eyeliner works the same way, so give it the same short lifespan.

Write the date on the tube

Open a new mascara and write the month on the side with a permanent marker. Many brands print a small open-jar symbol with a number of months on the pack, and that figure is the one to follow. Bin it sooner after any eye infection. If it dries out, do not add water or saliva to loosen it, because that adds germs. Replace it.

Can eyeliner or mascara cause an eye infection?

Yes, it can, and the FDA notes that in rare cases infections from eye cosmetics have caused temporary or permanent loss of sight. The usual route is germs on the applicator reaching a tiny scratch on the eye surface. That is why sharing is the real risk: a friend’s lashes carry different germs from yours.

  • Wash your hands before applying.
  • Never apply or remove makeup in a moving car, bus or rickshaw. A bump can scratch the eyeball with a wand or pencil.
  • Skip makeup altogether while an eye is red, sticky or sore.
  • Do not use the testers at shops. Use single-use applicators or clean cotton buds if you must sample.

After an eye infection, what do you throw away?

Everything you used around the eye while it was infected: mascara, liner, kajal pencils, shadow brushes and sponges. The FDA says to discard any eye cosmetics you were using when the infection occurred. Washable brushes can be scrubbed with soap and dried. If the infection was pink eye, household hygiene for conjunctivitis covers towels and pillow covers.

Is sleeping with eye makeup on bad?

It is a bad habit. Flakes of mascara and liner can sit on the lid margin all night, rub into the eye and block the tiny oil glands along the lash line. Blocked glands show up as lumps, so a regular night-time habit can lead to a stye. Crusty, itchy lids may point to blepharitis.

The awkward truth is that a tired person after a wedding does not always remove everything. Keep a pack of eye makeup remover pads by the bed, so the job takes thirty seconds.

Is eyeliner on the waterline bad?

It is the riskiest spot. The waterline is the inner rim where the oil glands open. Pigment placed right there can enter those openings and sit against the eye surface. Pencil liner on the outer lash line, away from the wet edge, is the gentler choice. If your eyes feel gritty or lids are often swollen, stop waterline liner for a few weeks and see whether things settle.

Is kajal safe for adult eyes?

Kajal and surma sold as traditional kohl are not all the same. The FDA says kohl (also called kajal or surma) can consist of salts of heavy metals such as antimony and lead and links it to lead poisoning in children. Adults wear it more carefully than babies, but it can still sting and carry germs when it is smudged from a shared pot. For baby use, read kajal and lead for babies and keep it far from children.

If you wear kajal, choose a branded pencil with a full ingredient list, sharpen it before each use, and keep it to the outer lash line.

The traditional view

Kajal in many homes is tied to ideas of cooling the eye and warding off the evil eye. These are traditions, not tested benefits. Treat kajal as makeup, with makeup rules.

How do you remove waterproof mascara safely?

  1. Wash your hands first.
  2. Soak a cotton pad in an oil based or waterproof remover and rest it on the closed eye for ten seconds.
  3. Wipe gently from the lash base out to the tip, in one direction.
  4. Use a cotton bud for stubborn bits at the base, and keep it away from the eyeball.
  5. Wash the lids with a mild face wash, rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Do not rub hard. Rubbing loosens lashes and irritates skin that is thinner than anywhere else on the face.

Wedding season: glitter, heavy looks and long days

Loose glitter near the eye is a poor idea. The pieces are sharp and can scratch the surface. Use cosmetic grade products made for the eye area and apply glitter with a gel base on the lid only, never below the lower lash line. If glitter lands in the eye, do not rub. Rinse with clean running water and blink. Pain that lasts needs a doctor. For recovery tips after heavy makeup days, see wedding season skin recovery. More guides live in Eye Care.

See a doctor if

Get same day care for pain, loss or blurring of vision, a red eye with sensitivity to light, or something stuck in the eye. See a doctor within a day or two for a red, sticky or swollen eye that is not settling, a hard lump on the lid that lasts beyond a couple of weeks, or any eye reaction to a new product. Stop the product that caused it. A contact lens wearer with a red eye should remove the lenses and seek care promptly. This article does not replace an examination.

Eye makeup safety: questions people ask

How long can you use mascara?

Usually two to four months after purchase. Replace it sooner if it dries out, smells odd, or after any eye infection.

Can eyeliner cause an eye infection?

Yes. Germs on a shared or old pencil or liquid liner can reach a small scratch on the eye surface. Do not share, and replace liner regularly.

Is kajal safe for adults’ eyes?

A branded pencil with listed ingredients is a safer choice than traditional kohl pots, which can contain heavy metals such as lead. Keep it to the outer lash line.

Is sleeping with eye makeup on bad?

Yes. Residue can irritate the eye and block lid glands, which can lead to styes. Remove it before bed.

Is eyeliner on the waterline bad?

It is the riskiest placement because pigment can enter the oil gland openings. Line the outer edge of the lashes instead.

What should you do if glitter gets in your eye?

Do not rub. Rinse with clean running water and blink. If pain, redness or blurring remains, see an eye doctor.

Can makeup cause a stye?

It can contribute, because old products and unremoved residue clog lid glands. Warm compresses and a break from makeup help mild cases.

How to remove waterproof mascara safely?

Hold a remover soaked pad on the closed eye for ten seconds, wipe outward gently, then wash the lids. Avoid rubbing.

Can I share eye makeup with a family member?

Avoid it. Even close family carry different germs, and the FDA advises against sharing at all.
