Early Grey Hair (Jaldi Safed Baal): Causes and What Helps
Early grey hair (jaldi safed baal) is most often a family trait: if your parents greyed young, you likely will too. Smoking and stress can add to it, and a blood test for iron, B12 and thyroid is worth asking about, but most greying cannot be reversed.
The short version
- Main driver: family pattern. Ask when your parents and grandparents greyed.
- Other contributors: smoking, long periods of stress, and sometimes low iron, B12 or thyroid problems.
- Reversal: rarely possible once a follicle stops making pigment.
- Do not pluck: it will not fix anything and can irritate the follicle.
- Check up: worth a doctor visit if greying is sudden, early and comes with tiredness or other symptoms.

Why does hair turn grey in the first place?
Hair colour comes from pigment cells (melanocytes) sitting at the base of each follicle. They hand colour to the growing hair. Over time, or sooner in some people, those cells slow down and eventually stop. The new hair then grows out without pigment, so it looks grey, silver or white. No actual dye is lost from an existing grey hair, the strand simply never received any.
Because each follicle works on its own schedule, greying arrives strand by strand. That is why you see a mix of dark and silver for years before the whole head changes.
What causes grey hair at 20 or 25?
Family pattern
This is the strongest and most common reason. If a parent was grey by their twenties or thirties, your timeline is often similar. You cannot change this, and it is no sign of poor health.
Smoking
A 2026 case-control study from India in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal compared patients with early greying against matched patients with other skin conditions. Family history and smoking were significantly linked with early greying. It is one study in one centre, so it shows an association, not a guaranteed cause.
Stress
Stress is a possible contributor, but the evidence is early. A 2021 eLife paper tracked pigment along individual hairs and found that greying and its reversal can occur in parallel with changes in reported stress, including one donor whose hair regained colour when stress eased. The authors also describe a threshold effect: stress may tip hairs that were already close to greying. That does not mean a hard week turns your hair white overnight, which is a separate myth covered in can stress turn hair grey overnight.
Low iron, B12 or other health issues
The same 2026 study found lower ferritin (iron stores), vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels in the early greying group than in the comparison group. The NHS lists tiredness, pins and needles, a sore tongue and memory problems among signs of B12 deficiency and advises seeing a GP if you suspect it. Thyroid problems are also commonly checked when hair changes early. A blood test is the only way to know, and a doctor decides what to do about any result.
Can grey hair turn black again?
Mostly no. If the follicle has stopped making pigment, nothing you apply to the strand brings it back. The exceptions are rare cases where an underlying problem such as a deficiency is found and corrected, or the stress findings above where some hairs near the threshold regained colour. Do not buy products promising to reverse greying, and never start a supplement on your own. The pack or your doctor sets the amount.
What helps, honestly?
- Ask your family when they started greying, so you know whether this is a heredity pattern.
- Stop smoking if you smoke, which is good for far more than your hair.
- Get a basic blood check if greying is early and you also feel tired, weak, or notice other changes.
- Choose how you want to handle the colour: leave it, use a root touch up, or colour all over.
- If you dye, test first for allergy and read the labels.
Photograph your hairline monthly
Take one photo of the hairline and parting in the same daylight spot each month. Bathroom lights make a few silver roots look like many. A monthly photo shows your real speed of greying, and gives your doctor useful information if you do go for a check.
How can you hide grey hair?
Options range from semi permanent colour to full dye. Natural looking choices include a black tea rinse, which only tints slightly and washes out (see black tea rinse), and herbal dyes, though some packs still contain chemicals, so read herbal hair dye and PPD free labels first. Black mehndi or any dye can cause a severe skin reaction in people allergic to PPD, so follow the steps in hair dye allergy and patch test before each use.
Is plucking grey hair a good idea?
There is no solid evidence that plucking makes extra grey hairs grow, but there is also no benefit. The 2026 study listed plucking among habits associated with early greying, which may be linked to irritation or may simply reflect people who pluck more because they have more grey. Repeated plucking can inflame the follicle, so trim or colour instead.
Book a visit if greying starts in your teens or early twenties along with tiredness, weight change, hair loss, pins and needles, a sore tongue, or patches of white skin. Sudden white patches on skin as well as hair need a doctor. Do not self treat with high dose pills or injections. Greying alone is not harmful, and a normal blood test is also a reassuring answer.
Frequently asked questions about early grey hair
What causes early grey hair?
Family pattern is the most common reason. Smoking, long stress and low iron or B12 can add to it, but they do not explain every case.
Why do I have grey hair at 20?
Most often heredity. Ask your parents when they started to grey, and see a doctor if there are other symptoms like tiredness or hair thinning.
Safed baal kaise rokein?
Greying caused by genes cannot be stopped. You can avoid smoking, check for deficiencies if you have symptoms, and use colour if you want to cover it.
Can grey hair turn black again?
Rarely. A strand without pigment does not darken on its own, though a few cases reverse when an underlying issue is corrected.
Does vitamin deficiency cause grey hair?
It may contribute in some people, and one study found lower B12, ferritin and vitamin D in people with early greying. Only a blood test can tell, and a doctor decides any treatment.
How do I hide grey hair naturally?
Tea rinses tint lightly and wash out, and herbal dyes can cover more. Check labels for hidden chemicals and do a patch test.
Why do teenagers get white hair?
Usually family history. If it appears with tiredness, white skin patches or other symptoms, a doctor should check for a cause.
Does plucking grey hair make more grow?
There is no good evidence that it does, but plucking has no benefit and can irritate the follicle. Trim or colour instead.
What are the reasons for grey hair at 25?
Heredity, smoking, long term stress and sometimes low iron, B12 or thyroid problems. Your doctor can check which apply.
Does stress cause grey hair?
It may contribute. Early research tracked colour along single hairs and saw changes alongside stress, but it does not turn hair white overnight.
