Centella (Cica) Cream: What It Does and Who Benefits
Centella asiatica skin care is mostly about calm, not miracles. Cica creams can make irritated, over-treated skin feel more comfortable, and they make a sensible buffer on nights you use strong actives, but they won’t clear acne, fade pigment fast or lighten your complexion.
Quick facts
- What it is: a creeping herb, also called gotu kola, used in skincare as extracts and purified compounds.
- Key compounds: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, madecassic acid.
- Best for: stinging, tight, irritated skin; recovery after harsh products.
- Not for: clearing active acne, whitening, deep scars.
- Label check: look for it high on the ingredient list or as named compounds.
What is cica, really?
“Cica” is a marketing short form taken from cicatrice, the French word for scar. The plant behind it, Centella asiatica, grows in damp ground across South and South East Asia and has a long place in Ayurvedic and folk practice, where it was valued as a tonic and for small wounds. That is tradition, and it is worth keeping separate from what the cream on your shelf can do.
Modern skincare uses either a whole-plant extract or the purified triterpenes listed above. A 2014 overview in Phytotherapy Research gathered lab and animal work on these compounds and small wounds, scars and burns. Most of the cosmetic claims trace back to that kind of evidence, plus a growing number of small human trials. It is a reasonable ingredient. It is not a powerhouse.
Cica cream benefits: where it genuinely helps
Skin stung by too many actives
The commonest real use. Someone starts a retinoid, an AHA toner and a vitamin C serum in the same week, and their face goes raw. A plain cica balm on alternate nights gives the skin something soothing and non-fragrant while they cut back. Our explainer on how to tell if your skin barrier is damaged walks through the signs.
After a procedure
Some dermatologists suggest centella products after peels or lasers. Follow their aftercare sheet, not a shop assistant’s advice, because freshly treated skin needs specific care.
Sensitive, reactive skin
For skin that dislikes most creams, a short-ingredient centella moisturiser can be a gentler option. Gentle is relative, though: centella itself can cause contact allergy in a small number of people.
Centella asiatica for acne: does it work?
Not as a clearing ingredient. Acne needs things that act on oil, blocked pores and bacteria, which is why dermatologists use retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid and prescription options. Centella can make an acne routine more comfortable by easing redness and dryness from those products. That is useful. It just isn’t the same thing.
Many “cica acne” products also contain tea tree, salicylic acid or other actives. When something works, check which ingredient is actually doing it.
The buffer-night trick
On nights you use a strong active, apply a thin layer of a plain centella cream around the nose folds, mouth corners and under the eyes first. These are the spots that sting first. Then apply the active to the rest of the face. On the nights in between, use the centella cream alone. It’s a cheap way to keep a routine going without the raw patches.
How to read a cica label
Ingredient lists (INCI) run from most to least, down to roughly the 1% line, after which order can be loose. So position tells you a lot.
- Find the name: Centella Asiatica Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Water, or the compounds Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassic Acid.
- Check position: in the first five to eight ingredients is meaningful. Near the end, after preservatives and fragrance, means very little.
- Check fragrance: “parfum”, essential oils or “fragrance” undo the calming point for sensitive skin.
- Check the texture: balms suit dry skin, gels and light lotions suit oily skin.
- Patch test: the side of the neck for three days.
Centella usually appears inside a multi-step routine. If you’re paring down a big Korean regimen, our Korean 10-step routine guide shows what to keep.
Centella vs niacinamide: which should you pick?
They do different jobs. Niacinamide is better researched for oil, uneven tone and supporting the barrier; centella is mostly a soother. If your main complaint is marks and shine, niacinamide (see our niacinamide vs vitamin C guide) fits better. If your face stings with everything, start with centella. Many products combine both, which is fine.
Buy cica for comfort. Buy something else for clearing.
Is gotu kola from the garden the same?
No. Fresh leaves crushed onto the face are a different thing from a formulated, preserved cream. Garden plants can carry soil bacteria and you can’t know the strength. Some people also drink gotu kola as a herbal tea or take it as a herb; that’s a separate question with its own cautions about liver problems, pregnancy and medicines, so speak to a pharmacist or doctor before taking it by mouth.
Allergy to centella is uncommon but real: itching, swelling or a rash where you applied it means stop and wash it off. Don’t put any cream on open, weeping or infected skin; that needs a doctor. Acne with deep painful lumps, scarring or acne that started suddenly in adulthood should be seen by a dermatologist. If you are pregnant, check the whole product, since some cica creams also contain retinoids or strong acids.

Cica and centella questions
What are the main cica cream benefits?
Comfort for irritated, tight or stinging skin and support while you use stronger products. It is a soothing ingredient rather than a clearing or brightening one.
Is cica good for oily skin?
Yes, if the base suits you. Choose a gel or light lotion; thick balms can feel heavy on oily, humid-weather skin.
Is cica cream good for sensitive skin?
Often, provided the product is fragrance-free and short-listed. Patch test, because any plant ingredient can trigger allergy in a few people.
Can cica remove acne scars?
No. It may help skin feel better while healing, but pitted scars need procedures from a dermatologist and dark marks need sunscreen and time.
Can I use centella with retinol?
Yes. Many people use it on alternate nights or as a buffer around sensitive areas to make retinoids easier to tolerate.
Does cica lighten skin?
No. It isn’t a whitening ingredient, and products that promise fast fairness deserve suspicion.
Is gotu kola the same as centella?
Yes, gotu kola is a common name for Centella asiatica. Skincare products use processed extracts or purified compounds from it.
Can kids use cica cream?
For a child’s dry or irritated skin, a plain fragrance-free emollient is the usual first choice. Ask a doctor about rashes in children rather than trying cosmetic products.
How long until cica works?
Comfort is usually felt within days. If irritation hasn’t settled in two weeks of a simple routine, see a doctor.
