Beard Oil at Home: Carrier Oils, Ratios and Patchy Beard Truth
Here’s the honest bit first: beard oil softens hair and calms itchy skin under it, but it doesn’t grow a beard. To make beard oil at home you need 30 ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba, almond or til, up to 6 drops of an essential oil if you want a scent, and a small dark bottle. Below are the ratios, how to use it, and a straight look at castor, onion, rosemary and minoxidil for a patchy beard.
The short version
- What it does: softens coarse hair, eases beard itch, adds shine, reduces flakes.
- What it can’t do: fill a patchy beard set by genes and hormones.
- Basic recipe: 30 ml carrier oil, 0 to 6 drops essential oil.
- How much per use: 3 to 5 drops for a short beard, 6 to 10 for a long one.
- Patch test: 48 hours, behind the ear or inside the elbow.

Does beard oil actually work?
For comfort, yes. For growth, no.
Beard hair is thick and coarse, and the skin under it gets dry and flaky, especially in a new beard and in winter, because the face’s natural oil (sebum) can’t keep up with that many wiry hairs. A little oil coats each hair so it lies flatter, feels softer and itches less, and it moisturises the skin underneath. That’s the whole job.
What people say
“Beard oil for fast beard growth.” “Fills patches in 30 days.” “Coconut oil makes the beard thick.” These lines sell bottles.
What tradition says
Oiling the hair and beard is an old habit across South Asia: sarson (mustard), til (sesame) and coconut, often warmed, often on Friday. Unani and Ayurvedic writers valued oiling for dryness of hair and skin, and Muslim tradition also records care of the beard as part of grooming.
Our honest take Worth it for comfort, Skip for growth promises
A plain, cheap carrier oil from the kitchen shelf or the pharmacy does nearly everything an expensive branded bottle with a lion on the label does, and the extra money mostly buys fragrance and packaging. No oil changes how many follicles your face has. None.
How to make beard oil at home
Choose your carrier first. It’s nearly the whole bottle. It matters more than any scent.
| Carrier oil | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Jojoba | Light, close to skin’s own oil | Most skin, including oily |
| Sweet almond (badam rogan) | Light to medium | Dry skin; avoid with nut allergy |
| Til (sesame) | Medium, nutty smell | Dry beards in winter |
| Coconut | Heavy, solid in cold | Dry skin; can clog pores in acne-prone skin |
- Wash a 30 ml dark glass dropper bottle in hot soapy water and let it dry completely. Water in oil invites mould.
- Pour in 30 ml of carrier oil, or 20 ml jojoba plus 10 ml almond for a balanced feel.
- For scent, add up to 6 drops of essential oil in total. That’s about a 1% dilution, the sensible ceiling for facial skin. Sandalwood, cedarwood or a single drop of lavender are popular.
- Cap and roll the bottle between your palms for a minute.
- Label it with the date. Store it away from sunlight and use within about 6 months.
Sensitive skin? Skip the scent. Unscented is often the better beard oil.
Did you know? Jojoba “oil” isn’t technically an oil. It’s a liquid wax, which is why it doesn’t go rancid as quickly as most kitchen oils.
How to use beard oil properly
- Use it after a warm shower, when the beard is clean and towel-dried but slightly damp.
- Put 3 to 5 drops in your palm (6 to 10 for a long beard) and rub your hands together.
- Work it into the skin first with your fingertips, then down through the hair.
- Comb or brush it through so it spreads evenly.
- Once a day is plenty, and in a humid Karachi or Mumbai summer every second day may be enough, because more oil than the hair can take simply sits on top, looks greasy and collects dust and pollution through the day.

Beard oil after mehndi
Henna can leave beard hair rough and dry. Wait until the day after rinsing, then use a few drops of oil. It softens the hair without affecting the colour. Method in our mehndi for beard guide.
Why is my beard patchy, and can oil fill it?
Genes, mostly. Patchiness is largely inherited. How many beard follicles you have, and how strongly they respond to testosterone and DHT (a stronger form of it), is largely set before you’re born, and many men’s beards keep filling in slowly until their late 20s or even early 30s, so a patchy beard at 19 isn’t the final word.
A few other things genuinely matter: overall health, sleep and smoking, plus thyroid problems or patches of sudden hair loss (alopecia areata, round smooth bald spots), which need a doctor rather than an oil.
Castor, onion, rosemary and minoxidil: the verdicts
Myth: castor oil grows a thick beard
Skip as a growth plan. Castor oil is thick and sticky, and it can make hair look darker and fuller while it’s on, which is where the before-and-after photos come from. There’s no good evidence it grows new beard hair. Some people get irritated skin from it.
Myth: onion juice fills beard patches
Skip. The tiny amount of evidence for onion juice is on scalp hair loss, not beards. On the thinner skin of the face it stings, smells for hours and can cause rashes.
Rosemary oil
Depends. One small comparison on scalp hair loss got rosemary oil a lot of attention, but it was a single small piece of work on the scalp, nothing comparable exists for beards, and undiluted rosemary oil can burn facial skin. If you like the smell, a drop or two in your 30 ml bottle is fine. Don’t expect a beard.
Minoxidil
This is a real medicine for scalp hair loss, and some doctors use it for beards off-label. It can cause itching and flaking, unwanted hair growth on the forehead or cheeks where it drips, and in some people dizziness, swollen ankles or a fast heartbeat, which matters a great deal if you have heart trouble or low blood pressure, so it should only be started and supervised by a doctor who knows your health. We don’t give amounts or schedules for it. Products sold as “minoxidil beard oil” deserve extra caution.
Dermarolling
Rolling tiny needles over the face to “wake up” follicles is popular online. Risky. Done at home with a dirty or shared roller, it risks infection, scarring and spreading acne bacteria. Ask a dermatologist before you try it, and never share one.
Patch test every new oil and blend for 48 hours. Stop if you get redness, itching, bumps or burning. Never put undiluted essential oil on your face, and keep oil out of your eyes. Don’t use almond oil if you have a nut allergy. Acne-prone skin may break out with coconut oil; try jojoba instead. Tea tree and eucalyptus oils are poisonous if swallowed, so store bottles away from children. See a doctor for round bald patches, sudden beard loss, or a red, painful, pus-filled rash.
Beard oil: questions men actually ask
Does beard oil help beard growth?
No. Not in any real sense. It softens hair and soothes the skin, which can make a beard look healthier, but it doesn’t create new hairs where follicles aren’t active.
How to make beard oil at home?
Mix 30 ml of a carrier oil like jojoba or almond with up to 6 drops of essential oil in a clean dark bottle. Roll to blend, label with the date, and use within 6 months.
Beard oil kaise use kare?
After a shower, put 3 to 5 drops in your palm, rub hands together, massage into the skin then through the hair, and comb. Once a day is enough.
Can I use coconut oil on my beard?
Yes, if your skin isn’t acne-prone. It softens well but is heavy and can block pores on the face. Jojoba is lighter if you get breakouts.
Beard oil for patchy beard: does it work?
No oil fills patches caused by genes. Many beards fill in more by the late 20s. If patches are smooth round bald spots, see a doctor.
What are beard oil side effects?
Mostly rashes, pimples or itching, often from strong essential oils or heavy carriers. Patch test, keep essential oils at 1% or less, and stop if your skin reacts.
Is beard oil for the hair or the skin?
Both. Massage it into the skin under the beard first, then spread it through the hair. Dry skin underneath is often what causes itch and flakes.
Does beard oil help with dandruff?
It helps dry flakes from dry skin. It won’t fix flakes caused by seborrhoeic dermatitis, which may need a medicated shampoo. See our beard dandruff guide for the difference.
Is beard oil worth it?
For a beard longer than stubble, usually yes, for comfort and softness. A plain carrier oil from the kitchen or pharmacy does the job; expensive brands mostly add scent.
Can teenagers use beard oil?
Yes, a plain one is harmless, but it won’t speed up a beard that hasn’t come in yet. Beards keep developing well into the 20s.
Is minoxidil beard oil safe?
Minoxidil is a medicine with side effects, so use it only if a doctor prescribes and monitors it. Don’t buy mixed “minoxidil beard oils” of unknown strength.
