Banana Peel (Kela Chilka) for Face, Teeth and Hair: Verdicts

Banana peel for face, in one honest line: rub the soft inside of a washed peel on clean skin and you get a few minutes of cool, slippery moisture, and that is about all it does. It won’t whiten your teeth, fade dark spots, fill acne scars or lift wrinkles. Here’s what each viral use really does, the safe way to try it, homemade banana peel powder, and a plain verdict on peel tea for sleep.

The short version

  • Face: a mild moisturising rub, rinsed off after 10 minutes; no good evidence for pigmentation, acne or wrinkles
  • Teeth: no whitening; rubbing a peel is just rubbing
  • Hair: the banana flesh makes a softening mask; the peel adds very little
  • Powder: mostly made and sold as plant food; a teaspoon in a face pack at most
  • Peel tea: a warm, mild drink, not a sleep aid
  • Every time: wash the banana before peeling and patch test first

What does banana peel actually do on your face?

The white inside of a ripe peel is soft, wet and a little waxy. When you rub it on your cheeks it leaves a thin film of water, a trace of sugar and starch, and some plant compounds (polyphenols, the same family that turns the peel brown when it’s cut). That film makes skin feel smooth for a while. Then it dries, and the effect goes with it.

That’s why the “before and after” videos convince people: the after shot is taken on damp, freshly rubbed skin, often in better light, and damp skin looks brighter for ten minutes whatever you rubbed on it.

Dark spots are a different matter. Sun tan, melasma and marks left behind by pimples sit in the deeper layer of skin, where the pigment (melanin) is made, and a peel rubbed on the surface for two minutes can’t reach them or switch that pigment off. Daily sunscreen does far more for spots than any peel.

How to use banana peel on your face safely

  1. Wash the banana first. Rinse it under running water for about 20 seconds, rubbing with your fingers, then dry it. Bananas are sprayed on the farm, and the peel is what you’re about to rub on your skin.
  2. Patch test. Rub a little on the inside of your forearm and wait 48 hours before using it on your face.
  3. Wash your face with your usual cleanser and pat it dry.
  4. Cut a piece about 5 cm (2 inches) long from a ripe banana, yellow with a few brown freckles.
  5. Rub the white side in small circles for 1 to 2 minutes over the forehead, cheeks and chin. Keep away from the eyes and any broken or raw skin.
  6. Leave it for 10 minutes, rinse with plain water and put on your normal moisturiser.
  7. Two or three times a week is plenty. Stop at once if it itches, stings or turns red.

Can you leave banana peel on your face overnight? Please don’t. The sugary film sits on skin for eight hours, can irritate sensitive or acne-prone faces, and ends up on your pillow, where it attracts ants.

Myth: Banana peel whitens teeth in two weeks

The trend says rub the inside of a peel on your teeth for two minutes a day and they’ll turn white. They won’t. The peel has no bleaching agent in it, and the potassium and magnesium that the videos mention don’t change the colour of enamel.

What people see is what brushing does anyway: a bit of sticky surface film comes off and teeth look cleaner for a day. Brush afterwards, so the fruit sugar isn’t left on your teeth. Deep yellow or grey colour comes from inside the tooth and needs a dentist’s peroxide whitening. We’ve tested the other popular kitchen tricks in our baking soda and charcoal verdict, and the answer there is similar.

Myth: Banana peel removes warts, acne scars and wrinkles

The wart remedy (a square of peel taped on overnight for a few weeks) is old folk practice. Warts are caused by a virus, and many common warts disappear on their own over months or a couple of years, which is exactly why every folk remedy gets credit for some of them. Taping a peel on is harmless on unbroken skin. Cutting, burning or applying acid at home isn’t; our guide to massay, skin tags and warts explains why, and when a doctor should look.

Acne scars? The pitted kind is a dent in the deeper skin, and nothing rubbed on top fills a dent. Wrinkles come from years of sun and lost collagen; a peel only makes fine dry lines look softer until the water evaporates.

Damp skin looks better for ten minutes whatever you rubbed on it. That’s the whole “before and after”.

Banana peel for hair: flesh or peel?

For hair, the useful part is the fruit, not the skin. A very ripe banana blended completely smooth with a spoon of oil and a spoon of yogurt coats dry lengths and makes them feel softer after washing. The peel, or water boiled with the peel, adds nothing that plain water doesn’t, and there’s no evidence it grows hair or darkens grey hair.

A banana hair mask that rinses out

Blend 1 very ripe banana with 1 tablespoon coconut or mustard oil and 1 tablespoon plain yogurt until there are no lumps at all (lumps are what glue themselves into hair). Push it through a sieve if in doubt. Spread it on the lengths, not the scalp, leave 20 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water, then shampoo. Once a week is enough.

How to make banana peel powder at home (and who it’s for)

Most banana peel powder in shops is sold as plant food for its potassium, and most of the searches for it come from gardeners. For your face you’d use a teaspoon in a pack at most. Still, it’s easy to make:

  1. Wash the bananas before peeling, as above. Organic or home-grown bananas are the better choice for anything touching skin.
  2. Cut the peels into strips about 1 cm wide. Thin strips dry evenly.
  3. Dry them. In strong sun on a clean tray under a net, allow 3 to 5 days and bring them in at night. In an oven, use the lowest setting, about 60 to 70 °C, door slightly open, for 3 to 5 hours. In an air fryer, use the lowest temperature in 15 to 20 minute rounds, checking each time, because peel scorches fast.
  4. Test for dry enough. A strip should snap cleanly, not bend. Anything leathery goes back in.
  5. Grind to a powder and sieve. The peels of 6 bananas give roughly a quarter cup.
  6. Store in a dry, airtight glass jar away from light, and use within 2 to 3 months.

Throw the whole jar away if it smells musty, clumps from damp or shows any fuzzy spots, because mould on dried food can make toxins you can’t wash or cook off. For a face pack, mix 1 teaspoon powder with 1 teaspoon yogurt or rose water, leave 10 minutes and rinse. If you buy powder, check the label says food or cosmetic use; garden-grade powder isn’t made to the same cleanliness standard.

Banana peel tea for sleep: the honest verdict

The recipe going round is simple: wash a banana well, trim the ends, boil the peel in 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes with a pinch of cinnamon, strain and sip before bed. It’s a warm, faintly sweet drink. Some potassium and magnesium do leach into the water, but there’s no good evidence it helps you fall or stay asleep; the calming part is the ritual of a warm cup in a quiet room, which any caffeine-free drink gives you.

Side effects are few for most people. Anyone with kidney disease, or on blood pressure medicines that raise potassium, should ask first. Use well-washed, preferably organic peel, since you’re drinking whatever is on it.

Did you know?

Botanically, a banana is a berry. A strawberry isn’t.

In 2014 a team of Japanese scientists won an Ig Nobel Prize (the joke prize for research that makes people laugh, then think) for measuring exactly how slippery a banana peel is underfoot.

A cut peel browns for the same reason an apple slice does: an enzyme reacts with air.

What elders did

In many desi homes the inside of a banana peel was rubbed on mosquito bites, dry heels or a hot, itchy patch of skin, then washed off. It’s cooling and harmless on unbroken skin, and a cold, damp cloth does much the same. For choosing and storing the fruit, see how to pick, ripen and store kela.

Before you try it

Skip banana peel on skin if you’re allergic to bananas or to latex (the two allergies often go together), and never use it on broken skin, eczema flares, sunburn or open pimples. Keep it out of the eyes. Do a 48-hour patch test the way our patch test guide shows. Don’t use it on a baby’s skin. Anyone with kidney disease, or on blood pressure medicine, should ask their doctor before drinking peel tea regularly. See a doctor for a wart that bleeds, grows fast or sits on the face or genitals, and for any dark spot that changes shape or colour.

Banana peel questions people ask

Can I apply banana peel on my face daily?

You can, but there’s no reason to. Two or three times a week gives the same short-lived softness, and daily rubbing is more likely to irritate. Stop if you see redness or itching.

Does banana peel remove pigmentation and dark spots?

No. Pigment sits deeper than a peel can reach, and nothing in it switches melanin off. Daily sunscreen, and a dermatologist for melasma, are what actually fade spots over months.

Is banana peel good for acne?

There’s no good evidence it helps, and the sugary film can irritate inflamed skin. Don’t rub anything on active pimples. Gentle cleansing and proven ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or adapalene do the real work.

Can I leave banana peel on my face overnight?

It’s better not to. Eight hours of fruit sugar on skin can irritate, clog pores on acne-prone faces and stain your pillow. Ten minutes, then rinse.

Does banana peel really whiten teeth?

No. It has no bleaching agent, and any change is the same surface cleaning brushing gives. Brush afterwards so the fruit sugar doesn’t sit on your teeth.

How do I use banana peel for hair growth?

There’s no evidence the peel grows hair. If you want a softening mask, use the ripe banana flesh blended with oil and yogurt on the lengths, then shampoo it out.

Is banana peel good for grey hair?

No. Nothing in banana peel darkens grey hair. Grey strands have stopped making pigment at the root, and only dyes or henna and indigo change their colour.

How do I make banana peel powder at home?

Wash the bananas, cut the peels into 1 cm strips, dry them in sun or a low oven until they snap, then grind and sieve. Store it airtight and bin it if it smells musty.

What are the side effects of banana peel tea?

For most people there are none beyond a slightly bitter taste. Anyone with kidney disease or on potassium-raising blood pressure medicine should ask a doctor first, and peels must be washed well.

Are banana peels sprayed with pesticides?

Yes, bananas are usually sprayed during growing. The fruit inside is protected, but the peel isn’t, so wash it under running water before using it on skin or in tea.

Can you eat banana peel?

Yes, it’s edible when washed and cooked, though bitter and chewy. Raw banana peel is traditionally cooked as a sabzi in some homes; ripe peel is rarely pleasant to eat.
