Air Cooler Mosquito Larvae: Drain, Scrub and Store Right

An air cooler with water left in its tank is one of the easiest places for dengue mosquitoes to breed. In October, when people stop using the cooler but forget the water inside, the tank can turn into a nursery within a week. The fix is simple: drain it, scrub the tank and pads, dry everything fully, and store it covered. If you still run it on warm afternoons, scrub the tank every week.

Cooler off-season in one glance

  • Drain: every drop from tank and tray, using the drain plug
  • Scrub: tank walls, tray and water channel with a brush and soap
  • Dry: in the sun or open air until nothing is wet
  • Store: covered, with the drain plug open and lid or tank cap loose
  • Still using it: empty and scrub every 5 to 7 days

Why does a cooler tank breed mosquitoes?

Aedes, the dengue mosquito, lays eggs on the inner wall of a container, just above the water. A cooler tank is a large, shaded, still container, exactly that. The female does not need dirty water. She needs a wall, shade and water that stays for about a week.

An egg needs roughly 7 to 10 days to become an adult, and eggs on a dry wall can survive for months (CDC says up to 8 months). A cooler stored with a damp tank can hold eggs until the next summer fill.

How do I empty and clean a desert cooler step by step?

  1. Unplug first. Water and electricity are a bad mix, so switch off at the socket before touching the cooler.
  2. Open the drain plug and let the tank empty fully. Tilt it to get the last water out.
  3. Remove the pads and pump. Take the pump out, rinse it, and wipe it dry.
  4. Scrub the tank. Use a soft brush and soap on the walls and corners, especially a line just above where the water level sits. Rinse well.
  5. Wash the pads. Rinse them under running water and squeeze gently. Check for slime or smell.
  6. Dry everything in open air or sun for a day.
  7. Store covered. A big cloth or plastic sheet over the cooler keeps out dust and rain.

How often should the cooler water be changed while in use?

Insider tip: the 5 to 7 day rule

Run the cooler for the last few minutes with the pump off to dry the pads, then drain and tip the tank every 5 to 7 days. The larval cycle takes about a week, so a weekly empty and wall scrub breaks it. Put a sticker on the cooler with the day of the week you do it.

In a very hot week, topping up is fine, but topping up is not the same as changing. Old water with eggs on the wall is still the same tank. Drain it fully on your set day.

What about pads, grass and the water channel?

The thick wet pad is a hiding place for slime and bad smell, and the water channel at the top can hold small pools. Scrub both, and replace pads that are worn, stiff or smell musty. A pad that does not dry out between uses grows mould faster, and a damp musty smell is your cue to wash it at once.

Where should I store the cooler in winter?

DoDo not
Store under a roof, off the floor if dampLeave it on an open roof where rain fills it
Leave drain plug and cap off so air flowsSeal a damp tank tightly
Cover the whole unit with a sheetLeave the lid open to rain or leaves
Turn the tank over if it is portableLet rainwater collect in the tray

Check on it once in winter. A cooler left outside can collect rain, and a quarter inch of water is enough for a new batch.

How do I know if there are larvae in the water?

Look for tiny wriggling shapes, a few millimetres long, that jerk down when you tap the tank. If you see them, do not just top the tank. Drain it into a drain or onto dry ground away from standing water, then scrub the walls and dry the tank.

Where does a cooler fit in the bigger picture?

The cooler is one container among many. For the full house sweep, see the weekly Aedes check. Limits and when to see a doctor

Switch the cooler off and unplug it before cleaning, and keep children and pets away from the tank. Cleaning lowers the chance of breeding at your home but does not make you immune to bites from elsewhere. See a doctor the same day for fever with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, repeated vomiting, belly pain, bleeding or unusual drowsiness. Do not take painkillers on your own for a suspected dengue fever; let the doctor decide. Emergency: 1122 in Pakistan, 112 in India.

Cooler and mosquito questions

How do I stop mosquitoes from breeding in a cooler (cooler mein machar kaise rok)?

Drain the tank every 5 to 7 days, scrub the walls and keep the lid on when the pump is idle. In the off season, empty it completely and store it dry.

Can a desert cooler cause dengue?

The cooler itself does not, but standing water in its tank can breed the mosquito that carries dengue. Regular emptying removes that risk.

How do I clean an air cooler tank?

Unplug it, drain it, scrub the walls with a brush and soap, rinse and dry. Do the line just above the water level carefully, since eggs stick there.

How often should I change cooler water?

Drain and scrub every 5 to 7 days in use. Topping up between changes is fine.

How do I clean cooler pads?

Rinse under running water, squeeze gently and dry in the sun. Replace pads that are stiff, torn or smell musty after washing.

How should I store an air cooler in winter?

Fully dry, covered, indoors or under a roof, with the drain plug open. Make sure no water can collect in the tray.

Do mosquitoes live in cooler water even when it looks clean?

Yes. Aedes prefers clean still water, so a clear tank can still hold eggs and larvae.

Should I add anything to the cooler water to kill larvae?

Do not add random chemicals, since the air is blown into your room. Use scrubbing and weekly emptying, and ask your local health office if you need a larvicide.
